oh well, I guess I will be labeled racist but as I was going on a house viewing on 215th street I saw right across the street a bunch of ghetto looking men sitting on their porch profanity in full force. They were in and out of the house and they just exuded the aura of tough attitude I'm trying to get away from in Brooklyn.
The thing is, I was surprised. I specifically chose the area near Crocheron Park because I thought it was considered prime! Some of those homes cost millions and, I know I'll get slack for this but I have to say it, I wonder how folks like that get in?! Loud, obnoxious ghetto types in a prime area of Bayside, I wonder what really is the prime area b/c I was surely mistaken.
Those folks could be visitors, for all you know. Bottom line ... Bayside is generally a very nice area. Find out what's really going on before jumping to a conclusion.
If by finding out what's going on means I should find out why these grown men were in and out of the house with their baseball caps twisted and speaking vulgarities at one another I'm not sure how that will help the impression it left of what I thought was a prime area where you saw kids playing and a higher class of people who are well spoken etc....Someone told me to stay above northern blvd b/c it's nicer..ah well, it is new york city but even when I went to Crocheron park I saw these men playing basketball and they looked "thuggish"...I guess my expectations of Bayside were unreasonable.
that can happen in any random suburban type neighborhood. I don't know that part of Bayside well, but most of that area is very nice. I would recommend that if you don't like that block, check out some of the other parts of Bayside. Bayside covers a large amount of space within Queens.
A co-worker is from Bayside...he hates all the Asians moving in. Also, a friend of his...the guy's wife....they live in Bayside...and around Christmas she was pistol whipped...on her front stoop...in daylight...and robbed of the bags(Christmas gifts) she had.
I've noticed above Northern Blvd to be the nicer area, below it going towards 43rd ave there seems to be more buildings (co ops?...look like projects) than homes. Anyway, maybe closer to Bay Terrace is nicer (but it's far from the LIRR), Auburndale seems nice but there's not much shopping around compared to Bell Blvd.
The problem with many of the outer borough neighborhoods like Bayside is that many of the houses are owned by absentee owners.They are inherited by people who left the city years ago and instead of selling the houses they keep them and rent them out,often through section 8 which pays top dollar.The combination of low NYC property taxes and high section 8 rents enables them keep these properties as rentals forever.
It happens everywhere.
