How do grad students in NYC (NYU, Columbia) rent an apartment in NYC? Obviously they won't have any verifiable income, and they don't live in the underclassmen dorms, so what papers would they need for a landlord to rent to them? Do they have to pay a years worth of rent in advance?

Thanks.

Normally if the student has financial aid, landlords require the college student to pay the year rent up front just like you would had you dormed on campus.

My old roommate was a law student at NYU and he had to show that he had enough loans/savings to cover his rent and he needed a guarantor. That seems pretty common to me.
