Default Endicott NY?

Hi hope someone can give me a little info about Endicott NY, we have lived in the Poconos for almost 6 years and used to love it but it is declining rapidly, we want to get out now. Schools and crime rates are very important to us as well as an airport less than 2 hours away. Can anyone help with some info of Endicott or any great town in NY you know of to raise a family. Thanks

Default Endicott

K, your moving from the Poconos to Endicott.

Crime in Endicott is probably higher than other subrubs in the area such as Vestal or Endwell.

Endicott is a blue collar type town, with IBM right in the middle of it. Its a big village and has some nice parts, and some old run down areas.

Endicott has 5 top notch golf courses withing 15 minutes. There also are a minor league hockey and baseball team.

The binghamton airport is 20 minutes away. It only has 6 gates, but some of the prices are very cheap. I flew from Detroit right into Binghamton for $189 round trip, which was the cheapest price out of any upstate airports.

If you are looking for a bigger airport Syracuse is only an hour away, Rocherster and NYC are about 2 1/2 and Buffalo is about 3 1/2 hrs away

Default Endicott

Well I live in Edicott and personally I hate it. I am from the Elmira area. But if you need a job i guess its the right place. I have 2 kids in school and they are extremely over populated. The kids around here are out all hours of the night. Alot of drugs running around. It definately made me homesick. I used to be able to walk around my old neighborhood at 3am if I wanted, in Endicott I go in around dark. Not to mention it is dirty, it stinks and the water sucks......Always something being contaminated.

Default We used to live in that area 15 years ago

My husbands entire family lives in the Endicott area (it has a huge Italian population). Unfortunately IBM was a major player in that area and with their financial problems the whole Triple Cities (Binghamton, Endicott, JC) has suffered.

Endicott is a nice town, looks a little depressed as does the whole area. It is pretty safe (I would stay away from the Binghamton city areas).

We moved to Syracuse 15 years ago because of my husbands job and are much happier here. We bought a home in the outskirts of Skaneateles. If you aren't dead set on the Triple Cities area, you may want to consider going a little further upstate (1.5 hours) Camillus, Marcellus, Skaneateles, Dewitt, Fayetteville, are all nice family places in the outerlying Syracuse area.

Good luck,

Chris Briel

As in any town, if you live in a decent area, it's a great little town. There is a lot of activities for kids (town of union parks has great programs).

In the village of endicott there is more crime than you'd expect in such a small town, but endicott is a pretty broad area, some rural. I just moved (do to my fiance's job relocation) and I miss it terribly. I had no idea the schools were over crowded, they needed to rezone though, some elementary schools had room...while others did not.

The schools had been pretty good, sounds like that might be changing.... Vestal has some of the best schools though it is a bit more expensive than endicott. If you do your homework and watch where you move into endicott can be a great place to raise your family. My advice it stay out of the "village" proper areas like west corners and the maine- endwell area are nice.

I'd look into vestal as well.

Kimmie66, could you explain what you mean in saying the Poconos are "declining rapidly"?

Also, a few responders have said that Endicott Village has more crime than you'd guess. Can anyone say what this crime tends to be, and/or why it's happening?

We're still fishing around for places upstate, so this is very interesting to us.

Thanks in advance!

Sure, well my taxes have gone from around 4,000 to 7,000 in the past 6 years because of the influx of NY'ers and NJ people moving in (no offense so please no flaming) hence the need for more schools. Most of these people work in NY so there children become latch key kids, believe it or not some of them even stay in the city during the week and leave their kids to fend for themselves this coming from the school personel directly. Bored unattended kids are not a good thing thanks for all the graffiti showing up in this once beautiful area. Gang activity?? Traffic terrible, way to many cars for these roads to handle I could go on and on but my main concern is finding a safe enviroment for my children I thought I had but what we were trying to get away from has followed us here. I think we've decided on Skenatles it looks absoultely beautiful in the pictures that were posted here and my husband and I are from very small towns in upstate NY so it should be perfect for us.
Now just waiting till spring to list our house.

The crime is mostly (from what I recall) drugs and such I'd also heard gang rumors and such, but I lived there from 1987 until last month and I never felt unsafe....The irony is that the "bad" areas are those in the area close to the village police station. There area is depressed right now, but there are still really decent areas to live.

We just sold a house on Boswell Hill, which is in the west corners area. It was a very quiet and friendly place to live. We had great neighbors, lots of kids around and such. I was very sad to leave. We just moved down south for my fiancee's job (I fought tooth and nail to stay but the income just couldn't be turned down....lol)

You are going to find bad areas any place you move to anymore I think.

Seriously, check into Vestal, it's right next to Endicott and has both town and rural areas depending what you are looking for and it's one of the best school districts in the State, if not the country.

Jamie

Default Endicott, NY?

I've lived in Endicott for 20 yrs now. (I moved from the Town of Lisle)
It's not too bad. Unfortunately, there was a kid shot and killed one block
from me. They caught the dude. (he was from NYC. So was the kid he
killed. The murdered kid's people came from NYC to get away from the
crime.) The Endicott police are great at their jobs! There are gangs,
but for now, they're downtown. So's the welfare receipts. Go figure.
Jobs are at Wal-Mart, the Giant, K-Mart, fast food joints, and restaurants.
They all pay next to nothing; but waiters can make good tips. Also, there's
the temp agencies.:cool :

I agree with this poster. I am in Endicott now( visiting). If you float around on this site. You will see that crime is in each state. Everyone is talking about crime coming this way or that. Its out there, and the states need to work harder in fixing the problem.
Some areas of Vestal are nicer then others. But, the schools are good and the shopping etc.
I do think that the area up in Endicott, by Foxboro Lane and around that mountain top are just gorgeous. The homes are just beautiful, the scenery around you. Most of the lots have woods in the back area for privacy. I think in the Binghamton area this neighborhood is one that is just perfect.
The schools in Endicott are known as great too. It is just a short ride to the stores in the Vestal area. As far as people panning the town. We just don't use it. Nor do anyone that I know. Most of the shopping is in Vestal, the Mall area, Home Depot area........the downtown is off to the side and not even passed through.
Running from crime though is useless......Open the Ohio paper, and front page is crime. Open the New York paper.....crime. Pocono paper....crime.
It is all around, and not going anywhere fast.
