My husband has orders to report to FT Drum in Sep. We have 4 children and a large 12 year old black lab with health issues, and would need a larger single family home. There is quite a wait for on post housing, although we would prefer to live on post. What are the best areas to rent homes and what areas have the best school districts, if we can't move on post?

There is a bunch of information on Fort Drum and the Watertown area on here, but I'll add to it. As far as school districts, there really aren't any "bad" school districts, but some are viewed better than others. General Brown and 1000 Islands seem to be regarded highly. Same with Sackets Harbor. Most military kids go to Indian River and Carthage schools and both are good as well. I was stationed there from 2000-2003. So, I know the area pretty well.

Here is some information that might be helpful in making your decision: https://www.nystart.gov/publicweb/County.do?year=2009&county=Jefferson (broken link)

There is military housing in each of these counties.

There really aren't any "rough" neighborhoods in the area, but again some are better than others within the city of Watertown.

I know some soldiers did live in the Syracuse area and take a shuttle bus from the Air National Guard Base to Fort Drum. I'm not sure if that is still going on, but you could consider that as well.
