So my husband is headed to school in Nj, and I've been told jobs in my field (applied behavior analysis) are hard to get there right now..plus childcare and rent is a fortune. So I'm thinking about staying with family at Fort Drum and providing services there.

So my question is, will we be able to get out of that area in the winter to visit the husband in NJ? Is the snow that bad that'd we be stuck? Is it common for people to be unable to travel and have to miss work because of it?

I have a little Yaris....do I need to buy snow tires?

How is the need for special education, specifically services for children with Autism, on Fort Drum?

Thanks!!!

A Yaris would definitely need some snow tires for that area. The roads upstate are usually clear in the winter but I would try to get a little further south like Syracuse or Utica. Fort Drum is near the Tug Hill region and is known as one of the snowiest parts of the entire US. You'd be surprised at how little the snow affects people in the area though. The state and cities do a great job of keeping the roads clear and eventually you just learn to go drive in it regardless.

If your husband is already renting in NJ wouldn't it make sense to be living there too? I'm sure you've already thought it through, but just saying...

I would check out work at Syracuse Research Corporation. They always seem to be hiring for science related jobs so there might be something that fits.

This might help: Central New York Jobs

Also, check the Jowonio School in Syracuse or Good Shepherd in Utica. Hillside Family of Agencies has some places in Auburn and Syracuse.

You also look in Binghamton or somewhere in Orange County too.

We have been here for 3 years and I have never had a problem, granted I drive a 4wd vehicale, but the post before was right it doesn't seem to affect people too much and things are cleared well. Take it steady and your commute should be fine!
