I think most people are getting tired of the crazy, right wing corporate puppets and war mongers that have infected this country. Reality check: it wasn't "crazy leftism" that funneled 1/2 a trillion of our tax dollars into their cronies pockets butchering and slaughtering and maiming hundreds of thousands of innocent people, polluting their country with nuclear dust causing countless horrendous birth defects and destabilizing an entire region; it was the blood thirsty, power hungry right wing cons. So instead of being lonely outposts of sanity it appears these LIBERAL enclaves are now leading the way forward out of the neo-fascism dark ages that have infected our country.

A very cool part of Ithaca is its Farmer's market. Every weekend from April-Dec, as well as thursday evenings in the summer months, the neatest vendors selling their organic fruits, vegetables, and meats. In addition, some of the local wineries peddle their wares, along with lots of varieties of freshly cooked foods (Cambodian, Cuban, as well as burgers). There are also artists, musicians, and florists.
I think its neat that there are so many farmers in the area who are raising free range beef, lamb, poultry, and pork, and bring it to the market. I was able to fill my freezer with what I purchased there!!!!
Visiting the farmers' market in Ithaca is truly like a step back in time. You could almost imagine that you're at Woodstock. For those of you on the west coast, its kind of like Santa Cruz.
There's something for everyone. I recently took my 80 year old parents, and my 18 year old son, and his college roomate. We each enjoyed a different cuisine and ate at picnic tables right next to the Cayuga Lake Outlet, and watched a young couple getting married under the gazebo on the dock.

" You could almost imagine that you're at Woodstock. For those of you on the west coast, its kind of like Santa Cruz."
At the same time our now graying baby boomers were listening to "Talkin' bout' my generation" on the radio over in Ithaca...we poor unfortunates were over here in Tioga county listenin' to "Okie from Muskogee". No wonder us farmers lacked that...what did they call it...oh yeah....cosmic awareness...or some darn thing like that....LOL!

If anyone is looking to move here, I still recommend it wholeheartedly. I live 2 blocks from The Commons and I have yet to have to "wade through homeless people and hippies". We go several times a week to listen to live music, go to one several really good restaurants, or just walk around. I see families, older people, younger people, every color, every race. I have yet to be disturbed by college kids. We leave our kayaks and our bikes out on the porch and no one has touched them. We don't have an alarm and we don't lock our doors. I have never been asked about my politics, not even once.
I don't have kids in school, but it's my understanding that the school system is excellent. The paper is full of weekend activities geared towards children. There's so much to do and see here, especially if you enjoy the outdoors. The much-maligned (due to it's name) Lucifer Falls are incredible, and there's a place roped off at the bottom of the falls where you can swim. There are waterfalls everywhere. There's everything you can think to do at the lakes. Bike trails everywhere. Hiking trails everywhere. Skiing and sledding in the winter.
As for white collar jobs, well let me assure you that the bankers and financial planners aren't run out of town at dusk here. You don't walk into a bank or a real estate office and find a hippie smoking a bong there. There are professional people like any other town. If you're looking for a higher level executive position, you might consider a recruitment or executive placement firm.
Good luck, and please don't be put off by the political bantering. You can choose to be as politically active as you want or don't want here. Just like anywhere else.

Well congrats on your move! You are very close to Treman State Park. Here is the link to the website: New York State Parks :: Robert H. Treman State Park This is the place that you can swim at the bottom of the falls. There are two entrances: one just off Rt13 right before you get into Ithaca, and the other is on Rt 327 coming from Newfield. There's camping, and the most amazing hiking trail. Word to the wise: the trail is only a couple of miles long in each direction, but there are many many stairs! You can bring dogs (leashed and with proof of a rabies vaccine), but they're not allowed in the swimming area.
Also, get in touch with the people at Cornell Outdoor Education. They rent any outdoor equipment you need here: COE - Gear & Rentals. They also have people who sign up for trips. My fiancee organized an offroad biking trip this past weekend on a trail up in Yates county. They can direct you to a group of people who do what interests you most.
You can rent boats or jet skis on any of the lakes. There's a place on Rt 13 in Ithaca that rents kayaks and you can paddle alone or with a group on Cayuga Lake. It's a fun thing to do after brunch at Kelly's or The Boatyard.
There's also a few horseback riding stables around.
If you like to ski then Greek Peak is right up Rt13 just a little north of Dryden. You'll see the signs on the way up there. Here's the site: Greek Peak Mountain Resort If you plan on going more than 5 times, get a season pass. They also have night skiing until 10PM, I think.
For something for the not-so-active lifestyle, there's the wine trails on Cayuga and Seneca, but beware: the cops are watching the wineries, especially on the weekends, so bring a designated driver. During the recent wine festival they were giving breathalizer tests right at the end of the parking lot.
Also, I'm not really a NASCAR fan, but the Watkins Glen Grand Prix Festival is coming up in about a month. The fun part of that is they have a reenactment with vintage cars around the original circuit, which is basically right through town. If you ever drive around WG, you'll see some of the street signs are little red race cars. I think the vintage race is 9/7/07.
Hope this helps! Have fun!
