I use to live in Liverpool which is right in that area. I am a teacher and actually interviewed with the Mexico school system! It is a nice small town approximately 40-45 minutes driving time to Syracuse. Mexico Schools http://www.mexico.cnyric.org/MainMenu.cfm (broken link) didn't seem all that bad either. If you're looking for a bit closer to the Syracuse area, Fulton is nice, a bit bigger. Baldwinsville or Liverpool are really nice and these two put you within 20 minutes of Syracuse. Liverpool and BVille school systems are also among the top along with Cicero-North Syracuse and Fayettiville-Manlius. So hopefully these ideas will help!
I actually was getting sick of the 20 minute commute into Syracuse every day but now wish I had that back. I live in Queens and now have a 45 minute commute.

It's not a bad town at all, but does get a LOT of snow in the winter. You employment opportunities would be limited there unless you could find work in a school system, etc. Pretty much plan on commuting from there to a begger city--can be a chore in the winter.

mexico ny
I live about two miles outside of Mexico, and have lived in the area my entire life. Mexico has probably the best school district in the county and is very family friendly. Trust me you do NOT want to move to Fulton. It may be a it larger and closer to Syracuse, it also has more problems with drugs and crime. Hope this helps.

Google Oswego, NY for real estate offices. Lots of Irish here. It's a small port city on Lake Ontario with adjacent college 18 miles from Mexico, NY and a much more feasible place to relocate if you don't know anyone and want a small, friendly place with more amenities. Good schools, lots of parks, and activities from opera to auto racing. Very family oriented.
There are no jobs upstate anywhere unless you're a nurse or an engineer. Our summers are gorgeous but we get a ton of snow. You will be able to buy a nice house here paid in full for the cash you have.

Sonja I am from Mexico, NY
When I was growing up, some European families (German, Dutch, etc.) bought farms in Mexico, and their kids went to Mexico Academy and Central Schools with no problems. I always did more studying outside of the school day, but in the quiet countryside, that's no problem.
The housing prices are fantastic. It's near Oswego, NY, which has a beautiful harbor festival each summer. The winters are snowy. My brother used to drive several hours to Lake Placid to practice luging. Mexico has a good German language and Spanish program. I do not know if they offer French. I used to study it myself on the side.
The best part about Mexico, NY is the friendliness when neighbors have problems. I know that right now, with their record snow fall this month (haven't had one that good since the blizzard of 66), every neighbor is helping every neighbor dig out! No matter what happens, people help out.
If you want to know any more, let me know.
BTW, My parents are in their 80s and want to sell their farm in the near future. It's beautiful.

TWO traffic lights. Lots of churches on church st. The traditional ones are very nice. Sometimes the holy roller element get a mite aggressive with their have you been saved routines, but I just smile and tell them not by their limited criteria.

How is Mexico handling all the media coverage lately? Do the residents there like all the attention?
