Tylerdylan, Mexico Ny is pretty rural. It is about 30-45 minutes to Syracuse without snow. I guess you know, they get buried up there and all that snow fall you have been seeing on TV is in Mexico NY. I don't think it is semi rural, it is rural. Fulton is a bit depressed. I would recomend buying a house in that same price range in an area like Cazenovia, Marcellus, Onondaga, Baldwinsville, or Camillus. all of those areas are semi rural (or have semi rural areas) but are very nice with great scools. You'll see a lot of higher priced homes in those areas but there are plenty of Gentleman farms in the low One hundreds range.

commuting in NYS
I'd be hesitant to commute an hour one way upstate. Given the unpredictable weather conditions it just seems hazardous. Growing up, I only met a couple of people who commuted from places like Dansville or Cohocton to Rochester everyday. Conversely, in NM you have some people commuting up to two hours one way to work believe it or not! That's like commuting to Rochester from Corning or Elmira for god sakes. The weather is probably a huge factor in the dispersion.

Mexico Ny
I just have to say that I live in Mexico and have so for all my life. I love it here. It is a small town, but very warm and inviting. Yes we get a lot of snow, but you learn how to deal with it. It is a beautiful and safe place to live and grow up.

I realize the original poster has probably long since come and gone... but the idea of moving from Queens and then Europe to MEXICO, NY... wow, you could almost use that as a plot for a movie!
Seriously... it's a small town just on the edge of Oswego County's notorious snowbelt. There is a McDonalds, a snowmobile dealership and (probably) an A&P or the equivalent and that's about it. People probably do their shopping in Oswego, Pulaski or even Syracuse, a 40-minute drive south. If you are of independent means and like country living you might find it amusing to mix with the locals, but there's a reason why the houses are priced so low.

I find this post to be a tad negative.
Mexico is a small village that serves the surrounding rural area but it has the best schools in the county with some of the highest test scores and a long time ROTC program. There is a small downtown with a public library, bank, hardward store, pizza place, movie rental, a dollar store, several churches, a laundromat, McDonalds, a couple of nice restaurants, a health clinic, lawyers, county and state offices, a newspaper, and a lovely owner run midsized grocery (who will deliver to summer cottages). Oswego is 18 miles away for clothes shopping and you can get to brand new big box stores in Clay in 20 minutes.

Sorry if it came off as negative. I know folks who live in Mexico and it seems like a decent place.
