Mexico has pretty good schools; the Oswego School system is probably the best in the county. I would suggest that you look in that area. Oswego is only 15 miles to the west of Mexico, right on Lake Ontario.

I hope you enjoy snow, 126" of it. That's 10.5' or 3.2 meters! It's in the "lake effect" snow belt. However if you enjoy nature, in the summer it's heaven on earth.

I love Mexico NY. Moderator cut: advertising
We're right down the road from the local park, which seems to always have something going on for free. (Ice cream socials, fireworks, etc). There's a marina, a boat launch... trails. It's a great place to live.
We're looking to buy my uncles place, a place I helped build....My uncles place has some sentimental value to me.
Anyways, best of luck with your move. You can check this site too: Welcome to MEXICONY.NET

A Dollar store, lots of snow, and $100.00 a week to fill your tank up to commute to Syracuse for a job. Unless you can find somewhere local to work that "cheap" home will get expensive quick. If it has oil heat and old windows, living in a more expensive, but commutable area, closer to Cuse will seem like a bargain.

Live in Mexico
We live in Mexico NY. It is a very nice area. There are a lot of things to do; you can enjoy nature: Lake Ontario, 2nd most beautiful sunsets in the world, there are many places with nature trails, we have a lot of snow in the winter. You go shopping in Syracuse, Watertown, Oswego even Rochester is only a little over an hour away. There are many different community events. It is a very small town, with the small town feel and many of the problems that do happen in a small town. I lived in Denver for 10 years and wouldn't trade Mexico for anything. I love living here. Housing is rather reasonable. There are job opportunities at several Nuclear Power Stations, there are a few manufactures in the immediate area and Syracuse is not to far to commute.
I hope you find a wonderful place to live and please do not hesitate to check out Mexico NY. There is a lot of information on the web.

Mexico has always appeared to me to be one of the more civilized towns up in the lake effect snowbelt of Oswego County. Don't get me wrong - it's quite rural - but every time I go up there the people seem pleasant and have well kept farmhouse-style homes; not 12 rusting pickups in the front yard or anything.
Also, it was a big stop on the Underground Railroad back in the day so there are some historic buildings and such.
