Default Questions about West Hurley, woodsock, VS Saugerties, Windham

My husband is working in Hunter, NY but I have reservations about living in such a cut off from civilization community. I have looked at the schools in the areas mentioned in the title and all seem about the same, although not impressive at all compared to our current schools.

I would love opinions from resident of the areas to give me some pros and cons about Saugerties, West Hurley, Woodstock, and Windam.

I would like to be able to get a part-time or full time job when we move, I would like there to be activities for the kids and maybe for me too, like book club, theater groups, choirs etc...

Thanks for yur input in advance!

Woodstock and West Hurley are in the Onteora school district which is fairly well regarded. Woodstock is also a very active art colony with lots going on particularly in the summer. Saugerties is more of a working class village with a lot of very traditional older homes. Living in the immediate Hunter area could be a bit rough as you are at 2000 feet elevation so it will be colder in the winter and if you commute out to the Hudson Valley (Kingston or beyond) you will have to travel some mountain roads that could bbe scary in snow(beautiful in nice weather though). Most of the regional shopping for practical everyday stuff is in the town of Ulster (just north of Kingston). This is less than 20 minutes from West Hurley and Woodstock . Hunter and Tannersville don't even have a full size supermarket, only small "mom and pop" stores that will charge more. This area has a lot to offer if you like hiking, birding, hunting or fishing. Lots of state land and lots of wildlife here.

I'm a Saugerties native. You will find a lot for your kids to do in the Saugerties area. There are a lot of theater companies in woodstock and rhinebeck (A LOT), community sports, the library has a lot progams and crafts for kids. You will find a lot in Kingston too. It's a great place to raise your children.
