Olean, NY
Can anybody tell me anything about Olean? Is it safe, how are the schools, how are the different seasons, and is it diverse?

Thought I'd have to relocate there for a job in 94'...didn't happen. Olean is kinda' out there by itself...a long drive to other towns in any direction.

Overall it's a safe area, there have been several armed robberies recently and there are areas with drug problems; that being said I do feel safe. There isn't a lot to do right in the city though. For good shopping you'd probably have to Buffalo or Erie, both are about 90 minutes away. I don't know much about the schools in the area. We do have a child, but he's a toddler and we're leaving the area next month. This area does have four seasons, summers tend to be pretty decent - not too warm for too long, probably in the 80s or lower most of the time. Winters here are no fun - LONG, quite cold, windy and tons of snow. I've heard people talk of snow in August, but I've never seen it myself. Personally, I wouldn't call this area diverse at all. I grew up in a totally different area (near Philly), and am used to a good bit of diversity.

I'm looking to move to the area too - considering a job with the local animal shelter. Are the house prices really as low as 50K and if so, are they in "good" areas - quiet and safe? And I assume that "tons of snow" means the area enjoys the same lake effect stuff Buffalo gets?

One of the nicest small cities in US of its size.Either like small places or you don't.
Surronding countryside is some of the prettist in the world and I don't say that lighty!

Olean has always been a reasonably safe place to live I grew up here and the negative comments on here are quite exaggerated. The armed robberies referred to were thefts at Uni Marts that happen in every community in America these days. However they caught the suspects in reasonable time. This is not a community that tolerates this kind of behavior. It is a pretty town with alot to offer and nice friendly residents for the most part. The trouble comes from outsiders moving in and bringing their bad behavior with them. I'm sure you will love it here as well as the surrounding areas. I live about 20 minutes from Olean now but still love to come back and especially love the diversity in Restaurants. And its not as diverse as a big City like Philly but it is a small town after all.

Also the snow isnt as bad here as Buffalo but we do get our share. The housing sounds about right and yes the areas are for the most part safe. Like in every town you have to watch what neighborhood you move into but you can pretty much tell by the houses where a nice neighborhood is here.
We are about an hour and 15 minutes from Buffalo or Erie Pa if you are looking for shopping on a bigger scale. While there is some agriculturally rural areas its not as bad as the one comment makes it seem.
