No one can drill in the Catskill Park nor the Adirondack Park. It will never be allowed in those two areas. You can barely build houses there without a fight. They are protected areas of land and have been for over 100 years.

The reservoirs in the Catskills are water for NYC so those reservoirs are also protected. If drilling is allowed in NY, it won't be allowed within a certain proximately to the reservoirs. Not like water stands still, but hey what do I know. I don't work for the DEC or EPA....thank god!

I believe they said before they were looking at allowing it along the Southern Tier, from Broome County west. After seeing the conditions in Susquehanna and Bradford counties in PA, I can't wait. They won't allow it in the NYC or Syracuse watersheds, but apparently there is no problem with smaller urban areas, because the state says so.

Anybody ever hear any updates on this? Is the town of Stamford (Delaware County) close enough to the Catskill Park that it would be affected (or not)? Have some family thinking of accepting a job offer in the area...

NY still has a moratorium on fracking. No one knows when it will end and what the outcome will be. There can't be any fracking in the Catskill Park or within so many feet of it because it's protected. Stamford is not protected.

Thanks for the update. That's not really the news I was hoping to hear, but it's good information to have in hand. That's such a beautiful area--let's hope someone comes to their senses and decides not to ruin it.

Just a poll of NYers on the news yesterday.

Upstaters are for it.

NYC is against it.

Since Albany does whatever the City wants make plans for this to never happen.

Poll: NY voters evenly split on fracking for gas | Democrat and Chronicle | democratandchronicle.com

Keep in mind that particular watersheds are restricted from having any fracking taking place. So, GreenFootprint, check to see if Stamford is within any of the watersheds that are restricted from having fracking taking place.

Drilling and water contamination is GREATLY exaggerated, if not completely made up by people who just don't want change. I've lived around drilling for 15 years now, and nothing has changed. My area is just as beautiful, my water is fine, as is the air.

Please do not listen to the NY hysteria regarding this. It's propaganda perpetuated by the "environmental terrorists" I feel so sorry for the regular folks who hear this stuff and believe it. You may not know it, but when the drilling is finished (takes about 8 weks) there's a very small metal thing that looks like a gas meter left in its place. You'd be hard pressed to find it.

Oh, yeah. Most of the towns who "ban drilling" don't have any gas to begin with. Strictly posturing.

Stamford is nowhere near any gas.

Don't get your information from Yoko Ono and Jeff Fox...they have another agenda, and it doesn't involve your welfare.
