Do you commute from one upstate metro to another? If so, which do you live in, which do you commute to? What keeps you from moving to the metro you work in? For example, I commute from Rochester to Buffalo. I've been in Rochester for a few years and my wife and I have a lot of friends here. My wife also works here, so it's easier for us if I commute instead of moving to Buffalo. Anyone have a similar experience?
I don't commute, but one of my co-workers commutes from Rochester to Syracuse every day and I don't know how he does it... it seems pretty brutal to have to be on the Thruway for more than an hour every morning and then another hour at the end of the day.
When I was in the Army at Fort Drum, I would commute from the Syracuse area to Ft. Drum. I did that off and on during the 3 plus years I was there and did it regularly for the final 2-3 months I was in. It took me about an hour each way. Even in the winter, I was never late because I-81 was pretty clear and there wasn't too much traffic early in the morning. I would wake up at 5 am, wait at the gate entrance due to the MP's checking ID's and would have formation at 7 am. Once I kept doing it, it was no big deal.
I did Rochester to Rome for a while. It was horrible being in the car for that long every day. Plus the drive time counted for the work day so I was only working 5 hours in reality, not being able to get much done.
I do the Rochester Buffalo commute a couple months out of the year. It's not that bad.
In my opinion, the Buffalo and Rochester metros could market themselves together as a WNY economic entity to companies. Counties like Orleans and Genesee could benefit from this as well. This area would have about 3 million people. So, that could a huge impact for Upstate NY.

Couldn't Syracuse and Utica do the same thing, if they haven't already? I agree, though. WNY should present itself as a large, unified economic entity instead of two small, segmented metros.

There actually is a website that markets the CNY region of the state. Look up NY's Creative Core.

As I found on youtube, looks like someone did the reverse:
Syracuse to Rochester is roughly 90 miles. The two metros...Rochester on the left and Syracuse on the right.
What's interesting about that commute is that it seems like it takes a shorter time going to Syracuse from Rochester than vice versa.
