On a related note- the Long Island offshore industrial development proposal/project has been scrapped as being 'too expensive.' Expect the pressure to increase now on upstate localities in the subsidy grab....

As I read the posts and looked at some things, i found this quite and interesting topic. I did not click on all the links so forgive me if my answer is hidden somewhere in there but i was curious--other than the aforementioned LLCs and companies involved in the application/construction/negotiation process with the towns and residents, for these wind mills, it was mentioned that the energy produced is going downstate as opposed to actually helping the local economy and towns. Does anyone actually know where the energy is going or what utility corporation is receiving the benefit of this wind energy in the down state area? After all is said and done, someone has got to be reaping the benefits stateside besides these offshore companies and their subsidiary business offshoots.
Just curious.

Samrai, I don't know about downstate, but I know Florida Power & Light gets a lot of the wattage generated in upstate NY.
Anyone know what happened in Campbell? I saw huge semi's carting the blades on I-86 near there last week. The size of just one blade is staggering. You really have to see this up close. It looked longer than the wing of a jumbo jet.
I can't believe people are so naive about this. Acres and acres of forestland is destroyed in exchange for what amounts to pocket change for these power companies. Of course when the time comes to scrap these monsters, the people who wanted them so badly will turn to - who else? - the taxpayers!

The profit from actual power generated is pocket change (if even that- just as likely its a loss), the subsidy money can add up nicely in the corporate coffers though.

Just another link - but the Meredith Defense Fund in Upstate New York got their website going - Meredith has the most wind friendly law in New York State, thanks to a town board (3 people) who will benefit because they hold leases. And of course your taxpayers dollars going to fund someones new Hummer...
can't really add anything. Thanks!

Just a quick update from the Western Catskill Preservation Alliance (WCPA) regarding the current Industrial Wind Turbine proposal in Stamford and Roxbury. Important stuff for current and potential future residents of the area.
I have nothing to add to their article except it is almost (not quite) funny how deceitful the wind companies (in this case Invenergy LLC) can be when now the lies are coming out.
Thanks to the good folks who are pushing their buttons. I can't do justice to the current new information it speaks for itself. However it validates all the things us wind warriors have been saying all along here on City Data... Also if there are very specific questions regarding this proposal I will try and answer them. Thanks
From:Western Catskill Preservation Alliance (WCPA)
Western Catskill Preservation Alliance
"The Project - The project is being proposed by Invenergy, a Chicago based wind energy company. The project includes 33 Industrial Wind Turbines (IWT) and about 10 miles of access roads. Each turbines stands 410′ tall. The project spans the mountain tops from Mt. Utsayantha in Stamford to Grand Gorge, along Rt 23 and then up Rt 30 toward Roxbury. "

Does anyone know where the turbine parts that are being driven through the middle of Ithaca are going?

On a related note... I was talking to someone this weekend who told me that the subsidies these industrial wind developments get are usually based on the amount of energy the development COULD produce under continuous ideal conditions, not on actual energy production. Yeah, I suppose theoretically the wind could blow 35-45 mph, all day and night, 365-days a year, so sure, take my tax $$ based on that calculation....

I read something about this a few months ago. A man was having some turbines put on private property, but I can't remember the town's name. I think it was west of Ithaca. It seemed like it was a done deal.
