Default Anybody commute from Goshen to Manhattan?

Hello

We are looking to purchase a home in Goshen, but would like to know how the commute to Manhattan is from there. I see there is an express bus from Goshen to Port Authority that takes 1 hour 15 mins. Does this bus run on time? Curious to see what the train has to offer as well.

Thanks

My dad does it everyday. We live in Montgomery, though, 12 miles NE of Goshen. He takes the train from Beacon(~30-35 minutes from Goshen)...the quickest train from Beacon gets to GCT in 1hr 12 minutes. Door to door is ~1hr 50 min. You could also look into Metro North's West of Hudson line...the closest stations to Goshen are Middletown (6 miles to the NW) and Campbell Hall (7 miles to the E), with Secaucus Junction travel times ~1hr 30 min and ~1hr 20 min respectively. From Secaucus, you can take a separate train into NY Penn. You are looking at ~2hr trip from Orange County - Penn Station from either of those two stations, pushing total commute time to somewhere around 2.5hr. Problem is that traveling to either Middletown or Campbell Hall makes you go more out of the way than you really should have to go...so...You could drive ~18 miles to the Harriman station, also on the West of Hudson line, and the train ride would be about 1hr to Secaucus and then another ~15-30min waiting for the train/getting into Penn. Don't know anything about the bus, sorry.

In a nutshell, your options by train:

Beacon->Grand Central Terminal: 30 min drive, 1hr 12min train = 1hr 45 min trip, + getting to your place of work ~2.1hr

Campbell Hall->Secaucus Junction, NJ->Penn Station: 10 min drive, 1hr 20 min train + 20 min train + getting to your place of work ~2.2hr

Middletown->Secaucus Junction, NJ->Penn Station: 10 min drive, 1hr 30 min train + 20 min train + getting to your place of work ~2.3hr

Harriman->Secaucus Junction, NJ->Penn Station: 25 min drive, 1hr train + 20 min train + getting to your place of work ~2hr

Hope I was some help!

I don't even know people drive to Beacon from that far! The traffic from Beekman St to I-84 can be brutal, which is the reason why a lot of people from Newburgh take the shuttle bus or ferry to Beacon.

Is there any reason why your father doesn't go to Peekskill? In the winter might not be ideal to the two mountains having to climb.

Well, Goshen is a bit further of a ride to Beacon than from Montgomery. A ride from Montgomery takes about 20-25 minutes, although on one occasion I left my house at 9:39AM and parked the car in the Beacon lot at 9:57AM as the train was pulling in - only perfect I-84 / Beacon City / green light conditions allowed me to pull this off. So I figure the absolute minimum commute from Montgomery to Beacon is 18 minutes, with the max being somewhere up near 30. Not too bad of a drive. Beacon roads can be nuts during rush times, but my dad takes the 4:30 AM train in so it typically is a non-issue. Peekskill would only increase the drive time (and with gas being as high as it is...) / could be difficult during snowy conditions. He used to take the Newburgh shuttle but his hours changed and the bus doesn't run that early in the morning.

My husband does it everyday but he drives in. His hours fluctuate and it is just easier for him to have his car. Also his job has a garage for the employees so he doesn't have to pay for parking. He has taken the bus from here, we live in the Village of Goshen, there are 2 different stops, and the buses are on time.

Every one here is missing one important point. The train from Long Island to Manhattan could take a few hours even if it's only a 45 ride. We have not had any major interruptions in our service, except those two brutal storms last fall that wreaked havoc on our rail system. If the ride is 1 hr 45 minutes...read the paper, tak a nap, have your breakfast..meet some new people, read a book...my my..the possibilities are endless.

My husband used to ride the train from Goshen, when there was a station there. He had his bagle and coffee, shot the breeze and arrived at work ready to go. The ride home was, playing pinnocile, or hearts, or backgammon..with a bunch of guys he met on the train..or he napped!! He arrived home RELAXED! 2 hours..same 2 hrs it took us from Queens!!!!!
