Indigo Books and Chapters are the big major booksellers in Ottawa/Kingston...
Chapters is pretty much a Barnes and Noble clone. Indigo is a bit more interesting. Ethnic markets abound in Ottawa (By-Ward Market..)

There is a great farmers market on Sunday mornings at Landsdowne Park (I also believe there is a farmers market in Canton..not sure on the days), and Carp on a Saturday morning.

[quote=cat916;1147789]It usually starts snowing in late October through early April, and since it doesn't melt much until spring the snow and ice accumulates on the ground.

I would say that the snow starts to stay in early December and by late March/early April more is melting than staying.

The Adirondacks are a good shortish (1-2 hours away) trip, but the roads in the high peaks region will be blocked sometimes in the winter. Lake Placid is a fun little town if a bit touristy; there's also Whiteface Mountain right there.[quote]
Yes, the Adirondacks are close and the drive in the autumn can be beatiful. Lots to do in LP and the surrounding area.

hi,
thanks for the additional information. I have arrived in Canton.
My first impressions: Everyone is super-friendly which makes interacting with folks while doing the usual "settling in" business is quite pleasant.
But things aren't nearly as cheap as I had been led to believe. Groceries at the P&C (?) are not a bargain, and my home insurer's and auto policies are the same as they were in Ohio, again I expected this area to have a lower cost of living based on what I had been told by those living here. Rent is comparable to what I was paying before. I wonder if my expectations were unreasonable.
That concern aside, I look forward to exploring the area and my year here.
This weekend I may drive up to Potsdam and next week to Ogdenburg, I need to get a copy of my SS card for the DMV.

Avoid Ogdensburg...except for the Remington Museum. Not much there otherwise.

Oh come on, there is that lovely area between the bridge to Canada and the Ford dealership where you turn to Canton and then the rural squallor along portions of that road (the northern 1/2 of the road btwn O'burg and Canton has got the worst bits of rural squallor).

I'm from Ogdensburg and besides scenery along the river, throughout the city, and the the proximity to Canada there's not that much to do.
The plus is being an hour and a half or so away from Montreal and Ottawa (can get to Ottawa in less than an hour) and being in a sports oriented area .

Every time, we travelled back from Canton (my brother was a prof at SLU) to Ottawa, I chuckled when I saw that sign that said both "Bridge to Canada" and "Psychiatric Centre" on the same sign. I finally took a picture of it.
The number of abandoned farms on the road to Canton (especially the section closest to Oberg) is really depressing. Is there any particular reason for it?
