I did drive up to the Chapters/Ikea, thanks for the info on Loblaws, never heard of it. Part of the problem is that if I get stuff there, I might have to take along a cooler to keep some goodies cool/frozen until I get back to Canton.
I still enjoy how friendly everyone is here .. but we've had a few spells of incredible humidity - like today, the dewpoint was in the 70s!! Thats plenty uncomfortable. Folks keep telling me this is very unusual, and I tend to believe them since not many people have AC around here, still, it's happened more than I like :-)

From the Prescott store you'd be at the border in about 5 minutes which would cut down on your time to keep food cool.
You are right many homes in Canton don't have AC as it cools down at night quite well compared to more urban locations. The urban heat island effect doesn't hold in Canton.

CHEZ was much more diverse in the 80's when there were far fewer stations in Ottawa (the area metro was 750,000 when I was up there..now its over 1.1 million). 91.5 or 107.5 should be pickups in Canton for CBC. You'' pick up some Brockville and Kingston in Canton as well.

In the 80's as well there were more stringent CRTC regulations which made them play jazz/blues/reggae etc for a certain % of the day. As well, they had to run some sort of news magazine show in those days. IMHO, the playlist is mindnumingly narrow. e.g if they say they are going to play a Golden Earring song next, any guesses which one.

Well JiminCT Sirius/XM does have its advantages....although I'm not in my car enough to make it worthwhile. Yeah, CHEZ does like Trooper as well a lot along with Max Webster/AC/DC/Doors/Led Zep etc.

No offence...but empty feeling is exactly what comes to mind when I go to Buffalo, Syracuse, and Rochester.

Well, if you mean the downtowns of Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse, then I'd agree. The suburbs of Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse are lively and feel like they are GROWING and PROGRESSIVE to me.
If you judge a place based on it's downtown and inner city, then that's you're problem. The suburbs of Upstate's major cities are some of the best places to live in the US in IMO.

Having a camp up there and meeting many folks...the north country is FILLED with ex-suburban folks artists who have chosen a life that is more satisfying than living amongst Applebee's and McMansions. Manlius and Fayetteville are nice...but take a look from Tibbetts Lighthouse in the fall off the lake. Thats more uplifting to me than suburbia.

Love the Applebee's and McMansion references. Looks like Nanny 911 or Supernanny won't be filming in the North Country soon. Having a McMansion seems to be obligatory for that show.
Yes, the North Country is full of people who have escaped the suburban rat race as the living is cheaper and less stressful.

Upstate NY suburbia seems like anywhere else...IMHO there is nothing unusual or unique about it. Replace Penfield with Manlius with Amherst with Clifton Park. Thats why folks choose to move up to the North Country...many of them see suburbia and say "is this what life's about"?

well, last night a bunch of new faculty and 2nd year faculty met at the Best Wester bar and had a few drinks .. that was quite enjoyable. Someone looking at the gathering would have immediately picked up on the fact that this was mostly an international crowd. My impression is that it's mostly those of us with international backgrounds who make up the single demographics in the faculty.
Anyway, I had a great time, and mingling with other single faculty from all over the place does really help my outlook.
Oh, last weekend I went to the Indian restaurant in Potsdam .. took forever to get the food - it was busy - but it was worth waiting for. The 60+ year old American woman who came to give a belly dance (after some classical guitar music - not generally associated with the Indian setup) gave all of this a somewhat surreal feeling :-)
The leafes are starting to turn, I am hoping to get a lot of work done today and the motor down to Ampersand Mountain tomorrow. Azur (?) and Cascade are on my list too for the next few weekend as I think we are nearing the peak of the leafes turning (earlier than usual according to some locals).
I've found some nice trails to run in Canton (@6-8 miles depending). Someone mentioned Tuely (sp?) Pond and something with Rainbow .... presumably there are small water falls, but I don't recall.
I keep coming back to the posting here as I am exploring more. Also the list of media was good since my car stereo still is only set on NCPR :-)
