Solo excursion:
Drove 1h:15m to Ampersand Mountain today, about the same amount to get on top (didn't really stop or take a break other than to briefly chat with some folks coming down).
Spent about 2.5h up on top.. what a view! Today was a beautiful fall day, lots of colors in trees have started. Windy though.
The top was quite busy (relatively speaking) - quite amazing considering how challenging of a climb it was .. at some points I had to lean into the mountain.
Coming down was much less tricky than I had anticipated.
I am going to try to do a hike each of the next 3 weekends while the colors are still grand .. there will always be work (I usually work both weekend days).

Anyway, I had a great time, and mingling with other single faculty from all over the place does really help my outlook.
I keep coming back to the posting here as I am exploring more. Also the list of media was good since my car stereo still is only set on NCPR :-)

I believe you are right in that most of the single faculty are from out of the area. There are quite a number of Canadians (both faculty and students) at SLU, some of whom are connected to the hockey team.
NCPR is your best bet in the north country for radio that isn't mind numbing. You may also want to try CBC at 91.5, 95.5 or 107.5 or 103.3 (the classical/jazz service).

The weather here in Ottawa has been great the last week or so...warm in the daytime (+ 25 c) and reasonably cool at night (8 - 10 c overnight), and sunny. The Adirondacks are a beautiful area and once you get away from the roads it can be very quiet and peaceful. Some of the peaks south of Lake Placid are nice to hike on, but you should do it sooner rather than later in terms of weather etc.
Glad to hear that you are enjoying the North Country...make the most of it and realize it isn't Manhattan.

Lamsden Falls is nice little tour right near SLUs campus. Great place to fish and get some sun.

Are you still enjoying the "north country". The fall colours must be nice there at this time of the year.

Some of the colors are simply breath taking .. if I wasn't so crazy busy I'd take more advantage of hikes.
Actually, I managed to get a tear in my calf muscle the other day while warming up for a friendly game of soccer with some international junior faculty, so I've really been out of commission, though I can walk again normally without much use of vitamin I (ibuprofen). I'm tempted to head to Cascade before it's too late.
I have to admit being here has turned out to be better than I expected, though I suppose it helps that I'm so busy with work and job applications (this is a one-year visiting position, I may have mentioned this early on).
Though there are definitetly days when I feel a bit claustrophobic and feel the lack of places to hang out more than others.

Hi,
I tried to google for Lamsden Falls and came up with nothing. I haven't had a chance to ask anyone local yet, but is there another name for this place? Is it a place to simply hang out, or can you take a nice walk around there?
Thanks!

Glad you are making the most of your surroundings. With the right frame of mind, the North Country can be a beautiful place. Have you had a chance to head up to Ottawa or Montreal for a dose of culture?
