My husband and I are looking for a rental within a 15-20 min drive of Watertown, NY. We're moving from Texas and (like others) have had a tough time lining up anything from out of state. We're looking for a 2 bedroom or more that will take pets (apartment, house, duplex) - we're flexible. I've read about the housing rents and shortages and now have some first-hand experience with looking. I tried the classifieds and there were only six recent listings and all of those were rented. We can handle the deposit, lease, etc., we just need to find something soon. Anyway, if you know of anything else that will help, please advise. I'll be teaching at Jefferson Community College and my husband will be looking for teacher certification (which we've learned is a whole other problem if you already have a degree) so we don't need to be near Ft. Drum.

If you know of anything that could help us, please post or email me.

Thanks to everyone who has offerred help to those who have gone before me. It's been very informative.

Watertown has just approved permits for 1,000 new houses to be built. I suppose completion won't happen till next year.

I was just up there last weekend and was told that people are renting as far out as Cape Vencent, Clayton, Alexandria Bay, all gorgeous spots on the river within a half hour. Your best bet is to call real estate people in all these areas. They own rentals themselves or may know of a seasonal that may come up in another month or so. You may have to commit over the phone.

The other nearby towns are Sackets Harbor, Henderson, Adams, and Chaumont (pro: Sha-Mo'). If you're really stuck call a church of your denomination who may have further contacts.
