Brewster NY
My wife and I decided to take a drive today and visit Brewster New York. We always wanted to but did other things instead. Well the town was wall to wall day laborers, spanish bakeries, run down business's etc. We left saying what took place here? To say it was depressing is an understatement, it's over.

Check out Wallkill and New Paltz area in Orange County NY. The gunks and Minnewaska Lake. Nice drive and they have wineries and fruit stands.
Close you eyes if you go past Newburgh. People that remember that city from the 60's, 70's and early 80's CRY when they pass through Newburgh now. Used to be such a pretty, clean, classy town. Now there are hookers on the street, people peeing in the alleyways and gangs. I suspect that is what happened to Brewster. The 80's happened.
I really don't care for Brewster. Never did. Red Hook area going up the Taconic is about the only area I like East of the Hudson. Sorry you were so dissapointed.

Wow! Thanks for insight into Brewster! I'm considering a move to either NW NJ or Southern Upstate NY in the upcoming years for employment concerns, and Brewster was one of my top contenders for potential relocation, as it seems to be near to some mass transit options into the city. Sheesh---First I had Netcong, NJ shot down, and now Brewster, NJ as well? Maybe I should just continue with my original plans of the Scranton-NYC commute everyday? ;o)

It's sad but a lot of 'upstate ny' (upstate ny to L.I.) is rundown like you mentioned.
Those areas are so beautiful but I think they are neglected by the powers that be and people are moving away.

There are several areas of upstate that are beautiful and relatively unspoiled.
Some of the most desireable are:
Wallkill, NY
Goshen
Walden (the outskirts)
Montgomery
Northern areas of Marlborough
Most of Cornwall
Pine Bush
Minisink Valley (an outskirt of Middletown)
ScrantonWilkesBarre: the commute from Scranton is absurd. You will spend 5+ hours a day commuting, more if something happens on one of the highways. And the $$$ you will spend is rediculous too. I would recommend that on your salary you check out Monroe, Warwick, or Walden. Possibly even Goshen. You will have about an hour and a half commute from Walden, around an hour if you live in Monroe or Warwick. Goshen would be about 1:15. This of course all depends on where in the city or N. NJ you would work in. Goshen has a couple nice apartments.

An hour from Warwick, NY to Manhattan? Are you mad? Have you ever been on Route 4 or Route 17 during rush hour?
But I agree on one thing, commuting from Scranton to NYC would be INSANE.

The few people I know go from Warwick or Greenwood Lake to Monroe to the bus, so it is a little over an hour. The exact commute times are really hard to judge because you have to deal with the bus schedule - which is pretty good in Monroe - AND if you go in for a 7 am start time at work you can really get to NYC fast. If you start at 9, your commute is a whole nother bird! If I had to work in NYC, I would request a 6 am start time if possible, this way you get out at 2 ish and avoid a lot of the hassle.
Realtors up here in Walden area advertise their listings as being '"60 minutes to NYC" Well if you have a private plane - yes - we are only about 50 miles north of the city. If you are one of us normal critters, then you are staring down at least 90 minutes from up here.
Yes, I have seen Rte 17 during rush hour, and Rte 4 I remember the drive on those roads all the way back from the early 80's and it has changed so dramatically.
That is why my father moved out of N. Jersey and prefers to commute all the way from N. Orange County, NY!! Rte 4 stinks LOL! And 17??? There are too many rubberneckers and people on cellphones driving like a$$es for my liking. I once saw a woman trying to read a paper while yelling into a cell phone down there. Unfortuantely, she was the driver.....no wonder there are so many accidents down there!

This sounds eerily-familiar to I-81 through the Scranton area! For four out of the past five days, I've been caught in traffic jams on the freeway due to accidents! Granted, funnelling 80,000+ vehicles onto an outdated four-lane highway was a bad idea, and a testament to PENNDOT's lack of future vision, but the number of accidents in this region would be reduced if less people were yammering into their cell phones, applying make-up, adjusting XM settings, and using their Blackberries, and actually paying attention to the distances between them and the vehicle in front of them! It's a shame too that I-81 is going to be "too expensive" too widen; As daily traffic flow estimates are expected to climb up and over the 100,000 mark in the upcoming years, I wonder how much more rush-hour gridlock I'm going to be trapped in! YIKES!

Brewster is not upstate NY. Brewster is in Putnam county NY, which is just next to Westchester county NY.

Guess it depends on who you are talking to!
Many people consider anything north of NYC "upstate". Myself included.
