Hi All.

My husband and I currently live in the Morris Park section of the Bronx. We're renting a one bedroom apartment and contemplating purchasing a home. We're both 34 and we want to start a family next year. We love the area where we live in now, however, the homes are pretty expensive (north of $700,000). Also, I wouldn't send my kids to public schools here.

We were exploring Westchester, however, the homes and the taxes are astronomical. We both earn about $180,000K combined and work in Mid-town. Were looking for a 3 bedroom home with a garage between $400-450K and reasonable property taxes. The only thing we can find in our price range are homes in Mount Vernon and Yonkers. We drove through Mt. Vernon yesterday and we did not like it at all. My girlfriend just bought a home in Yonkers a few months ago off of wharburton. She likes here home, but I don't like the surrounding area. The area around the Saw Mill Parkway looks pretty nice. However, I hear the schools aren't good at all and my friend doesn't have children and doesn't plan to, thus schools are not an issue for them.

We were also thinking about maybe settling for a Coop or Condo, to live in a town with better schools systems. However, even those units are costly between the taxes/common charges on the condos and the maintenance on the coops. We're wondering if we should just continue to rent for a bit and then leave NYS. It just seems like there's no middle ground for finding nice communities and affordalbe homes for the young working class. Particularly areas with a decent commute to NYC.

Any thoughts?

You can find some nice houses in your price range further north.
I would suggest checking out Cortlandt and Yorktown in Northern Westchester, Mahopac and Carmel in Putnam county. Commute to Grand Central will be between 1 hr 15 min to 1 hr 30 min. These towns offer easy commute by train, easy access to I-684 and Taconic, good schools, great communities, and affordable housing. Good luck with your search and feel free to contact me directly with more questions.
