People will complain everywhere. They will never move unless they get to a breaking point, its human tendency.
Your taxes are insane though

Yeah for people over 55 and 1 in Amityville that is kinda ghetto.
For some reason LI has no problem with cheap housing being available for seniors, but nobody else.

Here we go with the wild exaggerations. What happened? Usually we can't count on you for those.
First of all, that's mostly federal money, not all NY money. LI landlords also do not look kindly on welfare cases and in reality, most welfare families end up in motels for months and years on end, not in nice apartments.
That article was about one single mother and her kids and she originally came here for a job from what I remember. It was not about a stampede of welfare recipients flocking to LI like it is a new gold rush. It was also not $92K she got when all the benefits were added up. Try around 1/2 that. Plus nobody is just handed wads of cash either. That covers housing, medical, food stamps, etc., etc., and is not cash in fist. Seriously.
Please note that it is not easy to get a social services windfall and, since the Clinton admin. changed "welfare as we knew it," there is a 5-year time limit for heads of household when it comes to TANF ( Temporary Assistance to Needy Families), not the lifetime benefit that the old welfare was (keep popping out kids; keep getting more money; do it until you are too old to have kids anymore).
It is actually better for a single head of household to not get married and work (even if it does not pay much) than sit around on public assistance because they can get all their income tax money that was withheld returned each year at tax filing time, as there are special Federal and state tax breaks just for them (earned income credit, etc.). Around tax return time, many workers who qualify for "head of household" filing status (and may or may not live with the other parent) are buying cars, treating themselves to new furniture or treating their kids to trips to Disney.

Reason: It's better to work a lower wage job that be on TANF

Syosset Mobile Home Park Community Take Over Not sure how this played out in Nassau.
As I recall, Brookhaven wont allow them, I think theres a few retirement ones in Riverhead left.
I also head theres a few holdouts in Amityville and Bay Shore.
Might make for an interesting new thread Kid?
Happy New Year.

I don't know what ultimately happened to the one in Syosset, but it had the distinction of being the only one in Nassau County. It probably also had the distinction of being the only trailer park housing 100% middle class residents in the country!

Maybe Jersey was #11 on the "list."
It only went up to 10 out of 50 states.

When my b-in-law lived in Bohemia he had a trailer park across the street and I never saw any indication it was 55 and older... Definitely people younger then that living in them. There's also a few out in the Calverton / Riverhead area that are easy to see as your standard run o the mill trailer parks with no indication of it being "senior living" either.
If you're sure of them being intended for seniors, my eyes told a different story. I guess there's ways around who lives in them.

I guess you spent a lot of time staring across the street at that trailer park if you know who every resident is/was. What was the identifying sign of "resident?" What are your qualifications for demographics with the ones in Calverton and Riverhead? Oh wait! Now that you live in NC, you must have gotten your degree in TPs. Well, I guess you certainly know more than I do on the subject.
There is no Yellow Brick Road to indicate over age 55 trailer parks. They too are "run of the mill" looking. They are probably old too as I bet a trailer park hasn't been constructed in decades on LI and the ones we still have are holdovers from when land was dirt cheap out in Suffolk.
To be serious now. They are not gulags. Seniors are allowed visitors, caretakers and guests of other ages too.

Well, he's family and I was there 2 or 3 times a week easy... The Riverhead area speaks for itself. But, again - I'm not arguing your point. I never intended to say these were gulags, just that they existed and I'm not knowledgeable enough on them being specifically senior or not. Frankly, many of the single family home neighborhoods in those areas look way worse then the trailer parks I saw.
Either way, for me the point of this thread isn't necessarily about the net net of NY losing residents, losing Congress representation, etc.... Because it's obvious that's happening. Beyond that, it's about the change in demographics as LI continues to push the middle class families away.
