Bergen County, New Jersey is beautiful and a very easy commute. You can also look into Rockland County, NY (stay away from Spring Valley, Monsey, Haverstraw).
It really depends on how young/old you are. If you want to really really have a quick commute..a great place to live..go to Hoboken. I am a NY born and bred..but Hobken..10 minutes to NYC by rail, and the living in Hoboken is as quirky as Rush st and Michigan Avenue, Lake Shore Drive in Chicago. I Love Chicago!! I Love Hoboken!!!!! And P.S. I am a NY Licensed Realtor and I am pushing N.J....hahahaha..Very upscale...very trendy. A fraction of Manhattan prices for similar living/ Pricey but not as Pricey.
If you wanted another beautiful place, look into NYACK! On the Hudson River, Nyack, New York..35 minutes to NYC..
On the Long Island side Nassau county. Some good places that are less city like include Oyster Bay, Glen Cove, Manhasset. Hicksville is more city like, probably more affordable. Commute to NYC via LIRR (travel time under a hour) or I-495... this way could be much much longer. From Greenvale (LIE Exit 39) its taken me 30 min and other times over an hour. All depends on time of day and weather conditions.
All of these are great spots. I would add the Hudson Valley to the list - cities like Peeksill, Cold Spring and Garrison are 1hr train ride and in a beautiful setting near the Hudson Highlands. Good luck.
Does Hudson Valley include Catskills, and Hudson? I'm looking for something safe, upscale or young, sort of west village like, close to an Amtrack if possible. I was looking into Hudson and it seemed great, but is it run down?
Also post this in the CT forum too. I think there are some easy commutable areas there as well.
Yes the commute may be good, but transportation costs is a major factor. Is the OP willing to pay approx $250 per month (and possibly subway depending on job location) for commute. Same holds true for Long Island. I guess it's something to consider.
LOL! ...but really it is still helpful info to those just finding this thread via search. Like me!
