didn't read all posts but if you have read most of the Bingo related threads you will see that many people (myself included) have wonderful things to say about the area.
BAE is a great company that has had a significant presence in the area for many years
I will say that if you and your husband are decent earners you can live VERY WELL in the Binghamton area.
There are nice areas in all of the surrounding towns endwell, JC, endicott, Vestal, Owego, etc...as there are crappy areas
if you're coming from DC (I've lived in NOVA too) and you want to live in a small town, then Binghamton may be the perfect area for you as there are many smaller towns surrounding
you can even live in Pa. if you wanted and commute, great bend, montrose...etc...

I adored being in Binghamton. We lived there for 3 years while my husband was a grad student/ assoc prof and, while I do NOT miss the weather, it was a friendly, safe and utterly charming place. It was, for us, the sterotypical university town with a wonderful blend of races, cultures and awareness of the world generated by the university. The buildings are old and there is an atmosphere to it that I have never found anywehre else. That being said, I would not move there to spend the rest of my life there. perhaps a few years but no more.
Be aware that the winters are absolutely horrible there but the city does a good job looking after the roads. There are plenty of outdoor activity options with large natural parks nearby. The City is just a few hours away so you can always hop in for a bit of culture and shopping

The City

Binghamton is nice because everything is close but like you said, some parts of it are a little "ugly" looking. I suggest maybe looking into Vestal or Endwell if you want the city type of living. Vestal is a little more expensive than the other areas but their are some VERY nice houses there. If you want to live in a more rural area, Chenango Forks is a nice area as is Susquhanna Valley. Good luck.

Okay, I am going to oppose this little message of yours. First of Endwell is ghetto. Same with Endicott. From this little survey took, most people in New York, and live in the cities, say that they think "isolated" ,as people like to call them, towns in New York are jokes.
Let us just say a lot of people thought the same. For the person whom is planning to move within the region, think about it, it's a city just like any other. Crimes, building, ONE to MANY old people homes, and sections of the city that people either call the rich or the poor.
Binghamton can look ghost like in late fall and winter. But when the sun comes out, well the people come roaming the streets. You know what I'm talkin about. Vestal is a buy place, but I wouldn't recommend it. But for someone like you, find a city. Hence Bing. If I was you though, I'd stay near Long Island. That' also the good thing about Binghamton, it's close to the city. I'm not tryin to make a spectacle of myself, but dude it' the truth.

I think you will love the neighborhoods up by Foxboro, just gorgeous homes and nice land. Good people........Go up Hayes to Taft if you mapquest find Rachel or Foxboro. It is not far from anything.....10 min. to the airport or so, and a short ride to the Vestal area. Vestal is not all that bad either, close to shopping.........Everything is close to Binghamton, no real need to live inside the town. Though there is some nice areas there too, over by the hospital but not too close to the river area........thinking of Matthews street and there abouts. You will have no problem finding neighbors.......
Great time to visit right now.......the weathers great.

More like ghetto are those areas. A lot of people in New York(the cities, JUST LIKE BINGHAMTON!) don't like 'em. Afton, I went there, I saw no Black people, now hispanic, all white. Now I got nothin against race, but who wants to live in sameness? No, not fer me, and certainly not for people who would be moving from any city. Binghamton has it's good places and bad, just like any other city. Simple words. And it is improving! Sure during the winter it can get gloomy, but spring and summer, THE PEOPLE COME FROM THEIR HIBERNATION! Crime, and stuff like that go around the city. Personal opinion though, WAY TO MANY OLD PEEPS HOME! WAY TO MANY! Bingo more apartments would be nice! Downtown if ya catch me drift people.
So...yeah.

SWB - very funny. Endwell is NOT a ghetto. Check the real estate listings to see.
