Cold Spring is lovely and has a vibrant town center. Fahnestock State Park is nearby, the Rec Center is decent and the schools are very good if that matters to you. Unless there's a big traffic jam or it's rush hour, it takes almost exactly one hour to drive down to the city and it takes 1 hour to 1:20 on the Metro North. You can live right in the town or you can live in the "woods" up by the East Mountain Road area.

nice towns in NY
about 90 mins. from NYC is Millbrook, charming, quaint, quiet, safe, but pretty pricey. Also nice is Red Hook (off the Taconic Parkway), further upstate there is Clinton (outside of Utica), very charming and affordable.

geneseo NY is a great place for anyone. i would not live anywhere else.
there is about 10,000 people living in geneseo. there are many singles because of the college. there are many stores coming and that are here already. the public school is very nice also. you are very close to Rochester. there is not much crime at all and when there is it is mostly within the college.

also click this link:

PS: the first web site probably makes people think that geneseo is only a good place for singles and not families but believe me geneseo is still a great place for families.
PS the second web site says the high temperature in July is 50 degrees. that is false. the hottest it usually gets in July is usually 95 degrees. that is very hot for here.
here are some more web sites

hoped i helped

not true - the nicest towns are within an hour - why - because they have the tax base to make them nice - POUND RIDGE for one - gorgeous.. you can't touch it for quality of life, aesthetic, and demographics....

I agree..actually is Saddle Ridge NJ within the hour of NYS? - that gets my vote too...finally some informed sophisticated folks! I was beginning to wonder if there were any left and yes, I am a bit of a snob when it comes to discriminating tastes..lol I like your list -might as well include Greenwich CT adn that little town that's right over the border from Greenwich...

Pearl River and Nyack are great little towns to live in. Both within an hour and both in Rockland County. Both have nice downtowns, friendly people, and good school districts.

Sagaponack, New York which is the richest town in the nation (the median home price is $2,787,500).
Also, although not in New York State but I would say Greenwich, Connecticut. New Canaan, CT as well.

Cold Spring also gets occasional visitors from NYC who come to shop. I personally don't like Beacon though...don't shoot me..its just my opinion...I hear Cooperstown is very nice.

Port Jervis has the added advantage of being on the Jersey Transit train line. Altho they do flood when it rains heavily, but that area, and Warwick, is really beautiful. Outside of the reach of NYC, tho, Cherry Valley gets my vote. Gorgeous town in the hills. Very remote.

Trying another approach....
Are you sure you need to limit yourself to this NYC radius? NY has many great towns just an hour or so further beyond the radius you've specified....
