I'd vote for Irvington or Piermont. A little further away, I'd go with New Paltz, Cold Spring, Fire Island, and Saratoga. Further away still, and I might consider Keene Valley in the Adirondacks or Trumansburg in the Finger Lakes area. Certain areas of the North Fork of Long Island are very nice as well.

I was born in Kingston then moved to HURLEY. I love that town!!! My parents moved us to Westchester County in my teenage years. I remember how mad I was with them for that. I felt I belonged in Hurley. ARe there any good sites out there about Hurley?

Post You mentioned medical care..........

I would have to rule out some places (like Keene Valley) just because they are so tiny and so remote...........

You are probably interested in being involved in some community events and having some activities associated with your town, right?

I think I have to mention Plattsburgh. It is holding its own throughout the economic downturn, houses are priced very modestly so you can do other things than just pay the mortgage, the community is very welcoming (it used to be a favorite Air Force Base post for transfers no matter what part of the US they came from) and we are in a great location to cities, larger towns, have great medical care, have the name brand stores (Lowes, Target, Best Buy, etc.) a nice mall and lots of seasonal activities. If you want to feel welcome you have to come up and visit. There are lots of lakes and the Adirondacks and lesser hikes, etc..........lots to see once you cross the border in Montreal......great train service and now direct flights (cheap new airline) to Florida and Myrtle Beach...........There is a website if you are interested..........nice place and friendly. And there are some brand new lake front condominiums on the market now that overlook Lake Champlain and Vermont for I think around 200 grand. A workable house would be much, much less than that........just wanted to mention it, since we have quite a few newcomers lately.

I would have to agree with Saratoga...In the summer it is the place to be, vibrant downtown area and very nice parks. And of course the Saratoga State Park(which houses SPAC) and many big-name outdoor concerts in the summer. I also do like Plattsburgh because it is on Lake Champlain and much less developed than the Saratoga-Albany Region. However it's about 2 hours north of Saratoga, but definitely worth the trip! I would check both out

I would suggest being withing reach of Albany up to Glens Falls , some very good hospitals within this area. You can't go anywhere today and find no crime. Its significately less here. Or Below Albany near 87.

See my note at the forum on "Seneca Falls - Geneva" before you move to the Finger Lakes.

I disagree.....I have been living here since 1984. My son grew up here and went to Port Jervis Schools.....I find the if you say "No Way" you must from New York City..... So you mistaken when you say our schools are dirty.

I'd have to agree. IMO all of the "nicest towns" are upstate.

Personally the nicest towns I've ever visted would have to be Scotia, Saratoga Springs, and Minerva. Keene was also very nice seeming, but I haven't spent enough time there to really know yet. Schroon can also be nice, but in the summer the main strip gets a little crowded (many flatlanders and tourists and all those Word of Life-ers).

Nicest Towns In NY?
It all depends how far north you want to live. The further you go the colder it gets, the more snow that falls. Utica NY is a pit, with massive snow fall. Syracuse is ok, but again massive snow fall.
The Nicest towns I have been in, Red Hook, Rheinbeck, Tivoli, Millbrook, New Paltz, The Catskills are nice, and not a million miles from nowhere.
Albany is a very large Ghetto, thou there are decent parts to it, the outskirts are nice, stay away from Troy, Cohoes, Latham, Colonie, Schectady, Scotia, Amesterdam.. The outskirt country area to these places are nice.
Saratoga is nice, but very snobbish and touristy. Nice to visit but don’t want to live there.

kingstons great. i like it in the fall.
Kingston is a Ghetto, They don't seem to plow the snow? Dutchess County is far nicer. (just over the bridge)
