Default Relocating to Plattsburg area

I will be moving from Southern California to the Plattsburgh area in the next two months with my wife and 11 month old daughter. We will be renting initially and would like to rent a house because we have a 75 lb dog and we'd like to have a yard.

We were hoping to spend between $800-1200 a month rent for a 3+ bedroom house. Is this realistic? If not, what can we expect to spend on rent and what resources are available on-line to look for house rentals (other than craigslist)?

Also, what areas would you all recommend to live in that are within commuting distance to work in Champlain, NY?

You could live in the Beekmantown/Cumberland Head area, Champlain, Mooers, Chazy and Plattsburgh. Check out other posts on here for more information.

Chazy is a nice little community that sits in between Champlain & Plattsburgh. Rouses Point is another town to look into as well, its my personal favorite in the area. Alburgh & Grand Isle, Vermont are absolutely gorgeous but I don't know if you can find anything in your price range there?

Check the Plattsburgh paper for rentals - Homepage » Press-Republican

You can also keep your eye on HotPads - Map Search for Real Estate, Apartments & Houses for Rent, Foreclosures and Homes for Sale though I just checked & there were only a few listings for the Plattsburgh area.

How could I forget about Rouses Point? It would be a good choice due to the proximity to Montreal as well.

This might help too: Homes, Housing & Apartments | Plattsburgh - Lake Champlain Region

That is a great website highlighting the area....

Thanks for all the replies so far!

One more thing, does it get hot/humid enough during the summer to need air conditioning (keeping in mind we have an 11 month old daughter)?

I lived a about an hour northwest of Plattsburgh for several years (one of my daughters was born there & the other was under 5 when we lived in the area), it never hit 100 & rarely hit 90. You'll have some uncomfortable days but they are few & far between, I can't ever remember thinking I had to have an AC.

Again, thanks for the replies thus far, I have another question.
How is AT&T cell/data service in the north country?
