Suffern taxes
I am considering buying a house in Suffern. I have heard that schools are good and the train to nyc is a good option for commuting. Anyone know why the taxes are so high? They are on par with Westchester. Can they be grieved?

The question shouldn't be "why the taxes are so high? They are on par with Westchester". Why are taxes whether it's Westchester or Rockland Communities be so high? There is nothing in the infastructure, services or the towns that warrants these kind of tax burdens. I believe all these areas have too many overpaid employees and strangeling union contracts that make living an existance rather than living....

I have been looking in Suffern for a few years now. This year, we finally saw two houses we liked and was ready to make an offer. The problem and dealbreaker was when we became aware that the taxes listed by the agency were not correct. The actual taxes were $3000 more and it did not include village taxes.
The same thing happened on the other house. Expect to pay between $10,000 and $12,000 for a small average sized house (under 1400 square feet).
We have stopped looking in Suffern and focused our search to a different area of Rockland.

It won't be much better anywhere else if schools are an issue for you. As you look though if the area is a "village" anticpate additional taxes besides town, county, school, library,...etc

The only reason I chose Suffern (in Rockland) is because it a has a good train system that goes express towards Manhattan. I like where it is located geographically and the schools are another reason. I also looked in Airmont and it has the same high tax situation.
However, there are other places in Rockland with good schools where the taxes are a bit more reasonable. Some people don't consider taxes when looking for a house.........but for me its a payment you cannot get away from......and taxes always seem to go in one direction.

Because the schools are good and the train to nyc is a good option for commuting.
I think it's pretty safe to assume the rule that anywhere within the commuting range of NYC, especially if you've got a train station in town, is going to have high taxes.

That's what I hear! I think the only way I can afford to live in Suffern is if I bought a condo.
