Recently bought a large wooden bread carrier box at an antique store that has this printed on the side: Spaulding Bakeries, Inc. Middletown, NY
Anyone know anything about this company such as whether or not it is still in business, etc? Would appreciate any info! You can email me at:
sandiblewis@verizon.net Thanks loads, Sandi

Hi Sandi,

I am responding to an inquiry dated 7/2007 of yours I found on the internet. Spaulding Bakeries, Inc. was a regional bread & pastry company based in Binghamton, NY. Their address was 39 Exchange Street, Binghamton, NY. I am not sure if it is the same Spaulding Bakery from Middletown, but here is what I know about the Binghamton company.

They were best known for their “Krullers,” which were medium size (approx. 2- 2 ½ inch long) powdered donuts. They had a slightly different taste than the typical powdered donut. They could purchased at most grocery and convenient stores in their trademark orange/white striped boxes.

In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s there was a “bread war” between them and Stroehmann Bread Company, which was then headquartered in Williamsport, PA. Bread prices dropped to as low as 10c a loaf, which even for that time was very low.

In the end, Spaulding filed for bankruptcy around 1982. Stroehmann’s purchased the “Spaulding Kruller” name in bankruptcy court. They did not, however, keep the same recipe. The do to this day sell donuts with the trademark name and in its signature box. I just does not have that famous flavor.

Here is a link to a web page with a picture of the box (about half way down) Click on it for a larger photo Change Happens: A Trip Back Home
