Default Thank You

Thanks so much for the photo tour!!! I have been reading the postings here because I'm looking to relocate from Westchester, and am very interested in Ithaca. The photo tour really helped a lot....now I know I must take a trip up there and seriously start looking.

I am a single mom of a 12 year old son. Can anyone tell me what the public schools are like? (especially high school).

Many thanks.

Default Intro & Questions

Hello everyone,

I too am a single mother that is looking to relocate to the Ithaca area (from Lansing, Michigan). My main concerns deal with school districts and neighborhood living.

My daughter's current school is smaller in size (only one classroom for each grade). I'm looking for a district that is a little smaller than Ithaca, but still offers opportunities for athletics, clubs, etc. It's also extremely important that it have a quality before and after school care program. Initially we will likely rent, but I hope after a year we'll be able to purchase a home. My ideal is a friendly neighborhood with a lot of kids and affordable homes (affordable to me is $130-150k for a smaller 2-3 bedroom home).

I'm noticing a lot of rental postings that mention access to bus lines. I currently work for Michigan State University and I know how parking can be limited on college campuses. However, I'm wondering if a majority of faculty/staff take the bus in at Cornell or whether the mentioning of bus lines is more for the benefit of students. If most fac/staff do bus in, how do those that are parents make it back in time to get their kids from school/after-care? One of the local after-care programs I looked into closed at 5:30pm.

Any information on quality school districts and communities to look into would be fantastic. If anyone is is familiar with Lansing and Ithaca and would be available to chat about the differences, I would greatly appreciate it. My email is Michelle_InMi@yahoo.com.

Thank you!
Michelle

^^ @ Ruby, I graduated from Ithaca HS nearly 40 years ago. I'm sure it has changed drastically since then. I will say I got a great education and was happy to attend IHS. Here is a link to the Ithaca city school system (hope it helps): Ithaca City School District

^ @ Michelle, one alternative to living in the city is the Village of Trumansburg (about 10 miles outside of the city). Here's a link to the T-burg school system: Trumansburg Central School District and here's a link to the Tompkins County Transit system: TCAT Home Page
Hope you get some info that will help you.

Good luck to both of you.

Default Hospitals in Ithaca and starting salary for RNs.

Hi, Thank you for the photo tour. I am a single female registered nurse and very interested in moving to upstate NY (looking at Ithaca, syracuse, albany). Can anyone please provide me with some info about the hospitals in Ithaca and how much is the starting salary for RN's with less than one yr experience? And also how much is the average home price?

Thanks for the beautiful tour! My husband and I are thinking of relocating to the Ithaca area and it is hard to find true inside pics of cities! You only usually get the Visitor info site pics....those that tend to highlight the great and hide the bad....this gave great insight to a beautiful area! We are originally from North Dakota, moved to AZ and then now to CA. we miss the smaller city, green grass areas! We thought we would enjoy the large cities but hate the traffic, disconnection between people and miss the snow! We truly are beginning to hate sunny days! (too many around here! Miss rain!) Thanks again!!!

Default Santa Cruz to Ithaca

My wife and I are thinking of moving to Ithaca soon.We are living in Santa Cruz Ca. and are finally over it. the price of a small townhome in Santa Cruz is 600,000.00 dollars so the cost of living in Ithaca sounds great to us but the thing I am fearful of is the winters. We moved to Portland Or. a few years back and could not stand the winters it was not the cold but the rain, it was grey for seven month's with not one day of sun or snow just ice so my question is is Ithaca as bad as the northwest. So please if you haved lived in both area's please tell me the truth.

Default Wow!~

What a beautiful town.

Who knew it was so hilly!

Great architecture, fabulous greenery, and plenty of places to go, things to do.

Thanks for putting these up!

Default Ithaca is Gorges

Where are pics of the falls that are all over Ithaca? There are a minimum of 7 waterfalls in the area.....they are magnificent. If you didn't go see any of them, you really missed out. They are found even in the middle of town!!!! Go back. Buttermilk Falls, Taughannock Falls, Ithaca Falls, Cascadilla Falls to name a few. They are amazing.

I apologize for the unintentional omission. I was running on a very, very tight schedule to ensure that my parents wouldn't notice me gone, so I had to leave before I had ample opportunity to fully-appreciate the city. I'll definitely be back in the future though---you can count on it!

In the mean time, why not check out some of my NEPA photo tours, which are featured in an "Announcement" at the top of the NEPA forum?

The picture that was described as the old courthouse is actually the old library (Not the old, old library, that's now a parking garage site). It's been closed for 6 years and because the inside of the building was designed in a way that made no sense and the powers that be weren't thinking about long-term, couldn't be expanded or redone into something else with ease.
