I am relocating to New York Metro area in June... I will be working in Manhattan, I will be going doing 6 AM- 2:30 PM (less traffic right, with free parking) Id be willing to travel a little over an hour each way. Are there any places with a "small town" feel. I get the feeling like Upstate NY is where I should look? Any schools/ towns with good football programs would be great. A large (population) High school would be preferred. I'll be renting a place until I buy. My budget is $400k.
Look into New Rochelle, North Rockland, Rye, Bronxville, Dobbs Ferry, Tuckahoe and Nyack, as all of those schools are HS football powers in NY State. New Rochelle is the biggest school and is a very diverse school with a pretty even amount of Whites, Blacks and Hispanics, with some Asians. It has a range of neighborhoods too. Ray Rice of the Baltimore Ravens went there. Check out the Westchester County forum.
Another area to look is Monroe-Woodbury in southern Orange County, which is another big school power in NY State. M-W and New Rochelle have been regulars in Class AA(biggest class in NY) to meet in the state regionals.
If you lived in Orange County you would have to get up sometime short of 4 AM to get ready and then drive. Keep that in mind. Would stick to Westchester.

True, but considering what the OP wants Monroe-Woodbury would be perfect. I guess it is "doable", as it is in southern Orange County.

I certainly agree. They have a great football program / usually a great team. The powerhouse of Section 9. So long as the drive doesn't bother him, MWB sounds like a solid fit. He could probably get into NYC in about an hour on most days on a [relatively] empty 87 given the time. Gas isn't getting any cheaper, though.

Good point about gas and I don't think there is any train access in that area.
My question is .... do you want to be near a great high school football program because 1) you want to send your kid(s) to that school in hopes that they can play for a state title contender someday or 2) you want to be in a district with a good team because you expect it to be like Texas where everything shuts down on Friday night & the whole towns comes out to support the team, creating an amazing atmosphere for high school sports .................... I only ask because if its #2 you are after you're not going to find it in NY (or anywhere in the region other than Western PA & Ohio). high school sports in NY are treated like, well, high school sports ..... unless you go to the school or your kid is on the team you likely don't care. Hell, people barely care about college football in NY let alone high school football.

Plenty of. Metro North's Harriman Station serves Monroe / Woodbury and is only a mile south of MW HS. An hour ride to Secaucus and another 12 minutes to Penn. Certainly an option when it snows.

Yeah, you right about HS Fooyball here in NY, outside of select schools/communities. There is a forum for HS Football here: Syracuse.com HS Football Forum that people throughout the state use.
BTW- The best HS Football game I've seen in person in terms of talent was New Rochelle/Syracuse CBA in 2004 for the NYSPHSAA Class AA State title. I believe both teams had something like 4-5 guys play either Football or Basketball at the D-1 level, with some others playing D-1AA football. Actually, Ray Rice broke his collarbone and if he didn't New Rochelle would have won.
