crime in cities in upstate new york
How is it that every time I read about a city upstate it seems that all our crime rates are rising?

I think Buffalo's murder rate is lower this year than last... which was a record year. The general trend is upwards for crime upstate though. This is part of a nationwide trend, and also as the cities get poorer you'd expect this kind of thing to happen.

I think it's a national thing. You here the same reports for Orlando, Miami, Indianapolis, Phoenix, Philadelphia, Dallas, etc. News reports thrive on any report of increasing crime (remember the commotion that was raised when they said that the national crime rate had increased, and spiked in several mid-sized cities? Google "indianapolis and crime", for example). I'd take it with a grain of salt.

Generally speaking ...the vast bulk of the violent crimes in the cities of my area (Capital District) involve people that are inviting it....i.e. involved in the drug scene, other criminal activity, abusive domestic situations.... Or just plain stupid....hanging around a bad neighborhood at night.

My area is also the Capital District...lots of bad things come north, straight up the Thruway. I'm sorry to generalize...but everytime there's a big drug bust or drug-related murder in Schenectady or Troy, there are many downstate locations attached to the names. Not all...but many.

I know what you mean JFK. I believe a lot of the crime in upstate is caused by people from downstate. In Elmira many of the criminals have ties to NYC. There are 2 state prisons in Elmira and a lot of the scum that gets released from there stays in Elmira along with there relatives who are visiting.

Downstate population has been pushing up the Hudson Valley to the Capital District for many years. This brings the good and the bad. On the plus side its one reason we aren't losing population like some parts of Upstate. It's also bringing the bad element into the urban areas up here....

And I dont think it's all New Yorkers causing crime because out here people are moving in from Cleveland, Detroit etc...
