Ogden -
Ogden is a very nice area to live in. My sister lives in Adam's Basin - a tiny little hamlet on the Erie Canal. There are lots of older homes as well as some new developments, so something for everyone. The schools are fairly good, which school district depends on which township you're in. A large part of Ogden is Spencerport schools - one of my favorite Erie Canal towns!
One thing about Ogden, watch the property taxes. I seem to recall that they were very high in comparison to the other "west-side" towns. Sweden is also a nice town, Brockport is the village and is a college town so watch out for "student ghettos". There are some areas in the village "proper" that you'll want to stay away from due to late night partying and parking isses etc.
There are some other towns on the west-side that you might want to look into. Riga, Churchville, Bergen, Clarkson, Parma, Hilton. South of Rochester you have Henrietta, Rush, Mendon ($$$), Honeoye, Lima. Also, parts of Genesee and Orleans counties might not be bad commutes depending on what you're accustomed to.
Good luck with your research...October should be beautiful!
Millie
QUOTE=rochacha;1241602]Ogden is a very nice and reasonably priced area, mostly because the east side is deemed the posh and "white-collar" side of Rochester. Other than the self-fulfilling prophecy part of that argument, it is pretty much unfounded and leaves the west side a little less developed and a wonderful place to live. I myself am looking to move into the Chili/Riga area from the east side. As for Ogden, most of the town is in the Spencerport school district I believe, which is well regarded. Portions are probably in Hilton as well, which is a fine school district as well. You should be able to find a very nice home for a little over $160 and a beautiful home for under $250k.[/quote]

Thanks for those ideas Millie....I'll check into those areas as well. I do think the schools in the Spencerport district have been pretty good according to Greatschools.net. Every area has good ones and bad ones, so we'll just need to be mindful of that. They're great in the Pittsford area of course, but homes are just more expensive.....

If you can't find fun things to do in and around Syracuse

But, whenever we want to do something "fun" with our family, we end up driving to the Rochester area. There is just more to do with young kids in the Rochester area. Syracuse is up and coming, and within 10 years, I hope that it will really have it's act together. Good luck.

You are not looking. One must always 'be a tourist' in your own town/region. That attitude keeps you alive, awake, and interested. I can't believe you'd drive to Rochester. I wonder what you find in Rochester that is more fun than anything you might find within the Central NY and Adirondack/Thousand Island area? Or again, right in Syracuse. Seriously, what can't you find to do with the kids in the Syracuse area?

Las Vegas to Rochester
I am seriously thinking of moving to Rochester NY as soon as my home sells (real estate market is slower than slow here). I am a single woman who wants the 4 seasons, afforable housing and a geneal good quality of life.
Can anyone share with me how brutal the winters actully are. I lived in Lake Tahoe CA for many winters so I am very familiar with snow. I just have to be realistic if I can survive alone in this area in the winter. Please help!!

I have lived in buffalo, rochester, and albany....grew up in rochester, college in buffalo, and law school in albany. Buffalo is very much the working man's town, and is great in the sense that while the winter's are HORRIBLE, everyone rally's around each other when it's tough. There is truly a great pride in buffalo that i don't think can be found anywhere else.
Rochester is great because it is more affluent than the other cities in the state and it does have quite the cultural scene when you look for it. Once you're there you are also pretty much 20 min's from everything.
Albany...well....i ran away as soon as i could! it's simply a dying city.
I would go for rochester or buffalo or a suburb around one of them... I hope this helps!

Everyone talking about how wonderful upstate and particularly the rochester area is are making me miss home sooooo much! I JUST moved to NC about 3 months ago, and am definitely homesick. Everyone says you have to give a place 6-9 months before really starting to re-think the decision, so i'm hoping this will get better.
I am heading back to rochester to work on wedding plans next week and can't wait!!!
I will echo the earlier post...i will always be a rochestarian at heart!

I was in the Raleigh area for over 12 years....FINALLY moved back to Rochester last week...you have no idea how good it is to come home to this place after living away for so long. I don't want to discourage you as you are such a recent transplant...but NC is VERY overrated, it is miserably hot and humid there from may-setpember...when it is BEAUTIFUL in Rochester. You basically trade off staying inside with the heat all winter, for staying inside with the AC all summer when you move down there....and the schools, don't even get me started.
