We are lucky that we are just starting out (both recent law school grads), and had nothing to really lose by trying a new place ... we had no house to sell, no kids....just really us and our school debt and our personal belongings.

I really reallu hope to learn to love the area! I think right now we're working on finding friends!

BUT, i will say I cannot WAIT to get back for a visit and to plan our wedding for rochester!

From where did you relocate to Syracuse? My wife and our 3 children, ages 9, 11, and 13, live in northwestern Nassau County on Long Island. We're finding the lifestyle unaffordable, and are considering relocating to Syracuse.

Thoughts?

If it's schools you are focused on, you may want to look at my area. I live in the town of Red Hook in the Hudson Valley. Our schools have consistently appeared on Newsweek's list of the top 1000 schools in the country, and we have been very happy with them. It is a beautiful area located near the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains and has lots of wonderful restaurants because of the local Culinary Institute of America. Oh, and I just happen to have a wonderful family home for sale!

We first thought of Albany, but after reading some threads on Albany, it seems maybe there's a growing crime problem?? Several said to "stay away". So, now we're thinking maybe the Syracyuse area could be good for us. We are definitely looking for safety/good schools and at least some good job oportunities. My husband grew up in Quebec and has spent a pretty good deal of time during summers in NY in the Lake Saranac area, so he feels somewhat familiar with NY. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I used to live in Utica and can sympathize with you. It's a dead place. A place I couldn't wait to leave. On the contrary, there is so much there I miss (family, friends, food) but never enough to make me move back. Upstate NY is great, it's beautiful, it has a lot to offer, but in the same breath, it has so little to offer. If anyone plans on moving upstate, best of luck, just avoid moving to Utica.
