Default Considering to relocate to either PA or Upstate Ny to be closer to family!

Needing advice? I am a family man (39 years old), wife and 2 young girls. I live in Tulsa Oklahoma, but wish to relocate to Upstate Ny or Pa (close to Long Island, New York). My wifes family lives in Long Island, but do to the extreme costs of living in that area, that would probably never happen. I work as an instrument controls technician, also have a Bachelor degree in Computers, and have many years experience in the oil refining business. As for Tulsa, I have a great job, a very nice house, and Tulsa is a nice place to live, however, my children very seldom see their aunts, uncles, cousins, and most important - grandparents. My question is, do you suggest and how to, "do to the economy", that I even consider relocating to the northeast. Tulsa is a nice city to raise children, however, being away from family is not good for my girls. I have thought about Albany, Ithaca, Syracuse or places outside of Philly - Langhorne, Hershey, etc... Anyone have any advice for me on this subject....Thanks

Maybe if we can get this NG stuff flying you could transfer some skills to that??

Don't hold your breath though. Here everyone wants there house 70 all Winter but doesn't want any messy stuff going on in the back yard if you catch what I mean.

To the OP, you might want to look into the Elmira-Corning area, where there is a small growth in terms of the oil/energy industry. Corning Inc. might have some jobs too.

Here's a great website that could help in terms of jobs: Central New York Jobs

As for housing, check this website out: Upstate New York Real Estate

If I read this right you are into process control instrumentation, those are pretty commonly needed skills in both the food and beverage and water and wastewater industries. You may very well find openings in the Harrisburg/Hershey area in both of these sectors.

The shale gas drilling in northern and western PA, soon coming to NY is of course drilling but wells need pipelines and pipelines need compressor stations so there would be a lot of instrumentation distributed across the infrastructure. The part of the shale in southwestern PA yields a "wet" gas so I understand refineries are being built there. The part of the shale in northern PA is more pipeline ready so from a process control point of view less needs to happen to it. However some of the water management aspects do need process controls, plants to deal with the produced water are working (initial phase, later more complicated phase soon) in Williamsport, and soon in Lawrenceville too I understand (this is the borough in Tioga County zip 16929, not the Pittsburgh neighborhood).

Due to the upstate economy I would suggest definitely finding the jobs first, and then planning where, exactly, to live based on that. Each of the areas has it's own personality and there are plenty of good, safe places, and lots of nice, friendly people for raising your kids around. Good luck with the move!
