So I know there are a couple of threads already about moving up there and I saw some of them but I have a few new questions (I think)...
Few things you should know first:
- We live in the south, hate the heat, want better schooling and don't care for the southerners' personalities...
- We're VERY open minded, love to learn and both are very interested in helping people/ nonprofit/ volunteer work...
First and foremost...How is the job outlook for teachers/professors???... my fiancee wants to go to SUNY Plattsburgh and do the BA/MST Adolecence Ed program to start teaching high school, then go on to get his PHD later on so he can teach college/University
Also, I saw in a few forums that there are small businesses popping up and was curious as to how successful/unsuccessful they have been
Third, Any opportunities to do volunteer work and/or work for a nonprofit (or even start our own if need be)
Lastly, I was curious as to how popular it is up there to do freelance work or work from home? Are there any opportunities for jobs like Technical
Writing?
******* Just want to take the time to thank anyone who may have read this thread and I appreciate your time, thoughts and input*********
I found a few...but i was most curious about how needed teachers are up there... I didn't find anything in the older posts yet... by the way thanks for all your help with this
Low turnover for teachers. easier to get a job in the sciences. I've met many of my former Education students still waiting tables 2 years after graduation, but they were unwilling to move. City of Plattsburgh recently laid off teachers, including friend who had recently gotten tenure. However, you can survive by substitute teaching ($85/ day at Beekmantown?) while hubby is in school.
Once graduated, be prepared to move. Many Plattsburghians refuse to move, and the districts tend to hire locals w/ connections to school board members, former students, etc... Gorgeous area, good school, provincial population.
Thanks for the info. It's good to know what we may be facing. Better to find out now than years down the road. LOL
***edit*** just googled the requirements to be a substitute up there... saw different things. Do I just need a BA or do I need some sort of certification also?
