Amherst, N. Tonawanda, West Seneca, Getzville and Cheektowaga are all suburbs of Buffalo. They even listed one company that is 15 minutes from downtown Rochester. If you'd like, you can list the name and locations of these companies. Otherwise, I think I'll go with the local Business newspaper. Can't believe they would miss so many newsworthy companies in their own back yard. Here's the link again

Today's edition of the "local business newspaper" has a feature article on whether Matthew Barnaby is going to be deported, so I treat Business First as I would any other "news" source and not as gospel.

I always try to receive my data from the actual source, as opposed to a news snippet, since there is often additional data in the original, or evidence of bias or error in reporting by the secondary report. In this case, the article in Business First did provide the web link which included the source data. Sure enough, the news snippet appears to be lazy journalism, as the writer very obviously did not do a very thorough review of the linked data.

I also did not see within the Business First article the number of businesses outside of Buffalo which were referenced by JWRocks, so I can only assume that data come from different sources. The same source should be used for all cities if possible, otherwise there is no assurance that they are evaluated by the same criteria.

So, as we ALL should do when possible, we should go back to the original source of the data.

...and here are the Buffalo area companies, per your "request":
BUFFALO AREA

3882 U.S. Energy Development 36% $51.9 million ■ Energy 106 Getzville NY

2768 EscapeWire Solutions 80% $2.5 million ■ IT Services 15 Buffalo NY

2496 Logistic Dynamics 94% $24.4 million ■ Logistics & Transportation 25 Amherst NY

4967 Worldwide Travel Staffing 3% $15.3 million ■ Health 370 Tonawanda NY

3211 Advanced Educational Products 61% $11.4 million ■ Media 37 Buffalo NY

3060 Synacor 66% $66.2 million ■ Software 236 Buffalo NY

2684 Practice Management Center 84% $6.8 million ■ Health 150 North Tonawanda NY

4725 The Hamister Group 11% $46.3 million ■ Health 740 Williamsville NY

3617 Audubon Machinery 45% $8.4 million ■ Manufacturing 45 North Tonawanda NY

2089 SLR Contracting & Service 121% $28.8 million ■ Construction 28 Buffalo NY

4916 Kee Safety 5% $10.3 million ■ Security 28 Buffalo NY

3970 Upstate Pharmacy 33% $39.4 million ■ Health 60 West Seneca NY

3587 Buffalo Filter 46% $12 million ■ Health 64 Amherst NY

4311 Copier Fax Business Technologies 23% $3.8 million ■ Business Products & Services 21 Buffalo NY

4647 Russell Bond 14% $5.2 million ■ Insurance 46 Buffalo NY

582 Construction and Service Solutions 562% $5.9 million ■ Construction 27 Buffalo NY

4609 Eminent Technology Solutions 14% $3.5 million ■ IT Services 27 Williamsville NY

2449 Energy Curtailment Specialists 96% $62.4 million ■ Energy 160 Buffalo NY

2152 HVR Advanced Power Components 116% $4.9 million ■ Manufacturing 14 Tonawanda NY

502 PURE Solutions NA 678% $5.1 million ■ Travel 30 Buffalo NY

2651 Edbauer Construction 491% $10.7 million ■ Construction 94 Blasdell NY

1836 Atlas Painting and Sheeting 142% $17 million ■ Construction 83 Amherst NY

2177 Christmas Central 115% $10.2 million ■ Retail 50 Cheektowaga NY

2783 KegWorks.com 79% $6.5 million ■ Retail 30 Buffalo NY
So, as I said earlier, the actual list (as opposed to a shoddy news article) shows:
Albany - 17
Buffalo - 24
Rochester - 34
Syracuse - 11

Now to get back to the original question of the thread, my answer is "who knows." I think that as all of the cities are in NYS the differences among them are relatively minor as compared to cities in other regions.

Buffalo may be behind the 8 ball demographically as a result of its Rust Belt history, but may have a greater advantage due to proximity to Canada. Albany may either gain or lose by its relative proximity to NYC. Syracuse may be overshadowed by being stuck between Albany and Rochester. Rochester may be poised for growth, but it too may be early in a demographic shift similar to Buffalo.

What is interesting is that Syracuse has the second biggest economic region in the state in population and the 40th in the country. I got that from the BEA Economic Areas map.

Well, it's been about five years since this thread started. How have the predictions gone so far? It seems that Buffalo seems to be a standout in terms of doing better than one might have expected five years ago. Hopefully the Buffalo Billion, despite the corruption around it and the financial predicament of SolarCity, will still be able to pull of something big. I recently read about SolarCity partnering with Panasonic to work out of the Buffalo facility/factory so perhaps there's still some light at the end of that tunnel.

Albany has also had some growth with Nanotech and SUNY Poly, which has also had some issues in relation to corruption.

Rochester and Syracuse have pretty much been flat, give or take, in terms of GDP.

With this said, there are still some positions to be has for those with the appropriate skills, education, etc.

I would say today it is Albany, Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse, in that order.

Something to keep in mind is that in terms of average annual wage according to May 2015 info from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, it goes Albany, Rochester, Syracuse and Buffalo. Rochester and Syracuse are really close in this regard, with both edging each other out in recent years.

There are other things that could used as bright spots for all of these areas, which have been mentioned in other threads. So, it may be a matter of importance and what you are looking for.

Population should also be taken into account. Rochester and it's MSA have far more people than Albany and Syracuse.
