Default SUNY schools, advice please!

Alright so I'm going to be a junior this year. I want to major in childhood education and minor in psychology. Or double major I'm not 100% sure yet, anyway here are my stats

4.0 GPA
By graduation 4-5 AP classes
Recreational softball 5 years
Volunteer with the younger softball team (10+ hours)
Key club ( volunteer)
Girls to Ladies ( volunteer group)
SAVY ( students against violence in youth. It's like a community outreach program)
I can get amazing recommendations.
I'm hoping to get an advanced honors regents diploma
17-19 on SAT ( estimation based on practice)

So based on these can you recommend cheap state schools and maybe give me some info on these other schools

SUNY Cortland
SUNY Binghamton (I know the major of childhood education is not an option but is it like a concentration degree, or is it just non existent?)
SUNY Albany ( not sure about this one, I think maybe too many people and idk about the area, I'm not the one total though I'm from Newburgh)

What about SUNY purchase do they have a teaching program?

I don't want to go to SUNY Geneso.

Thank you in advance

I'm from Montgomery (Valley Central) and was in your shoes 2 years ago - solid credentials, a number of recommendations, etc. - I chose SUNY Oswego, but my options were limited due to my major, meteorology, being offered on a limited basis throughout the SUNY system. Based on your credentials you will have no issue getting in to any of the schools that you listed.

SUNY Cortland: I hear they have a good childhood education program. Have some friends that go there and have enjoyed themselves - big party school if that is what you are in to. Way out there - a good 3 hours from NB. If you have a car then you will be fine -if not- public transportation can be a hassle. You will likely have to catch a ride with someone else from the area or take a bus up to the Regional Transportation Center in Syracuse for more options.

SUNY Binghamton: I hear good things about Binghamton from my friends...but to my knowledge they do not offer an childhood education undergraduate program.

SUNY Albany: Lots of students from our area choose Albany. Brilliant party scene, not too far from home, and the academics are up to par. An hours train ride to/from Poughkeepsie or a little over an hour car ride from NB. If you are looking to stay close to home this is a solid option.

Another strong choice would be SUNY New Paltz...20 miles away with a great childhood education program. Can feel like you are far away from home when in reality it is right down the road - great little town.

Other options include SUNY Oneonta (2.5 hours), SUNY Potsdam [extremely rural -> close to Canada (6 hours)], SUNY Plattsburgh (6 hours), or SUNY Oswego (4 hours).

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Well new Paltz is a little too close to home, from my house it's actually less than 20 minutes away; I'll never learn to live alone. 3 hours up is the furthest I would cOnsider. So cortland is my cutoff, and at this point my top pic something about the school feels right, by I shouldn't talk until I visit. Anyway I know that I'll probably get scholarship money so do you think I should expand my search and include other privates. Like I said I'll probably get money with my grades and being Spanish but I don't want to end up falling in love with a 35k+ school and get no money. So I guess how much of a reach financially should I make, like how much past what I'm comfortable paying alone (Plus a a few small lOans) should I go for if any?

If Cortland feels right to you, go for it - definitely visit though - if you are going up that way you may want to stop at Oneonta to take a look. The area surrounding the City of Cortland is pretty rural - substantially more rural than Orange County. Cortland has a Walmart/Supermarket etc., but you will have to go to Syracuse for the mall // other retail comparable to Route 300 in NB. Private schools - Why pay ~15k more for a school that may not be all that much better than Cortland // one that you may not get as much money from? I'd stick to SUNY - you are bound to get a scholarship based on your credentials. Do you go to NFA? Class rank is another kicker when it comes to scholarship amounts.

I do go to NFA and my guidance counselor told me that last year 1 persona had the adv regents honors diploma, so if she expects me to get it I figure I'm in like the top 5%. My freshman yr. I was at heritage an I had the 7th highest average in a class of about 350. NFa is much bigger so I'd assume I was around that mark.

You seem to be on the right path, so just keep up what you are doing and you will have no problems getting in to any college. I was 15th of 362 in my class (09') and got the highest scholarship offered at SUNY Oswego.

SUNY Oswego is also very good for education studies. I believe that Brockport and Plattsburgh are as well. Maybe even Buffalo State or Fredonia too.

Thats a little far, it is one I briefly looked at though. Sorry everyone, for sounding so naive, but as far as like scholarship and merit money, how and when do i apply? or do some scholarships just find you, like will my counselor find scholarships for me?
