I was wondering what are the best ways to meet nice, new people after moving to northern NY?

Having moved from NE to Florida 13+ years ago... I've found it very difficult to meet new people in the couple of times I have moved.

you have you obvious reasons like:
-Its a larger metro area
-everyone's busy

and then again.........
Florida just seems to have an issue with having friendly, inviting neighbors

additional info (if this helps):
-I love to hike...so I looked up some groups up there
-I have a dog...LOL

Try meetup groups, events/festivals and even places like a library, church, grocery store and musrums.

They can. I wouldn't say that it is a given, but those are places where you can strike up conversations.

Barnes and Noble and Wegman's are both great places for meeting someone.

Yeah I hadn't really ever planned of meeting people off this site, but it just happened and now we're awesome friends!

But here are some more suggestions:
Meetup
Take your dog to a local dog park
Meetin.org (the cities are few and far between so there may not be one near where you're moving)
Craigslist (hit or miss)
Couchsurfing.org
Join an adult sport team - softball, kickball, soccer, etc
Join a group class - cooking, painting, etc
Group fitness classes at a gym

Honestly, I don't see how a grocery store is a good place to make friends I shop in Wegman's all the time and never have I made friends there.

I looked at meetup.com earlier and that definitely helped for finding some local groups.... joining a class/team does sound interesting too (I need to find a yoga place when I move)... ive hear of other people saying meet someone at a gym...to me that sounds almost as awkward as the grocery store (pictures self jogging on treadmill...panting....trying to hold a convo LOL) I'm definitely going to try out some of the websites you put on here too

Thanks everyone

&&&& I'd love to hear peoples stories about moving to a new place
