I fully agree anything you can test out of is great. UVM wanted 4 or better to count the AP, each one is different.
It's also good to do some CC courses and transfer them if possible. Our CC now has a specific 2 year degree program that is 100% transferable to our 4+ year schools with a GPA above a certain benchmark. Costs less than 1/2 of doing it at the larger schools.
Are there dual enrollment options between the high schools and the SUNY schools up there? If so that's pretty cool. We have it down here and I highly recommend doing it. Talk about getting ahead in school!!! Some kids had their AA's completed by the time they received their high school diplomas!

It depends on the district's offerings. Here students take AP as early as 9th grade and have dozens of courses to pick from while in other districts the kids are lucky if they have a handful.
The only potential problems I see with dual enrollment is whether the courses offered are applicable to the student's future studies and whether they are transferable.

To add onto this point - Jazzii: Do you know if NFA offers courses university-in-the-high-school-setting courses from OCCC? They are usually slightly less challenging than the actual AP course. Valley Central had both options, AP and OCCC courses.

Some of the SUNYs required math and English placement exams as prereq so it would behoove the OP to check with prospective SUNYs as to their placement requirements before embarking on a CC course while in HS.
With respect to the other courses -- if they are non major it is well worth it.

Ahhhhhhh makes sense. Yeah here they require math & English placement exams if your SAT/ACT are below a certain number.

The only way some SUNYs waive the placement exam is a very high English score on the SAT (ACTs haven't really gained the prominence of the SATs with SUNY yet)
or an AP math score of a 4.
The OP's HS guidance counselor should know the details, or the OP should speak with an admissions advisor at whichever SUNYs she has on her wish list.
