I know nothing about Newburgh, except they now have great (i.e., cheap...AirTrans & Jet Blue) airlines that we don't get in the capital district (Albany). It has caused me to venture there 2x in one year. We have spent money and others have too.

Maybe there is a future developing there??

Default So who's to blame ?

I was born and raised in Newburgh and lived there til I was 28. I am now stuck on Long Island and would love to move back but can't because I am divorced and have four young children I wish to be near.
In 1964, my mother could walk me in my stroller at midnight in an area of the city I wouldn't even drive through at that time today.
The city wheeled and dealed and got the OK to dole out welfare / section 8 and jumped at the chance for state / federal money to do it. (At least that is how I remember the beginning of the end).
The criminals and miscreants moved in, the good folks moved out, and the owners of the properties are now slum lords.
The way I see it, if Hoboken could clean up and claw out of it's mess, which I believe was worse, then there is no good reason Newburgh can't.
The waterfront is beautiful, and aside from the history, Newburgh possesses some of the finest real estate of any city along the Hudson.
Any suggestions ????

newburgh was in life magazine in 1952 as one of the ten best places in the us to live - - it is pretty obvious that when you insist that anyone who gets welfare in orange county HAS to live in newburgh, and when industries like sweet orrs and the fabricoy pull out - and when the unions see to it that you cannot even change a faucet in your own home - you are setting the stage for miscreants to move in and trash the place - very sad really - my heart is with the newburgh I knew in the 50s - before people ruined it

Unforunately Newburgh has fallen into the trap of a city that has become a dumping ground for people on public assistance. There examples in every region. It seems many government agencies like to concentrate people on assistance in one or two locations. Maybe it is easier that way to make the problem of poverty out of sight, out of mind for the majority of people. This concentration of poverty IMO is what is holding back Newburgh's potential. If you look at most communities with problems it seems they all have poverty rates above 20%. Newburgh povery rate 25.8%
