Have a relative thinking of relocating/investing in this area. Married couple with a baby on the way. Any current insights in to the area, pls?

Not much better than it was 13 years ago when this thread was started.

Waterfront is nice and cleaned up, and a couple other neighborhoods aren't too bad, but most of the city is still a dump that runs rampant with drug abuse and violence. You'll hear that the violence is all gang-related, but unfortunately innocent bystanders can get caught in the crossfire (and also, even if they aren't shooting at you specifically or stabbing you, do you really want to live in a place where other people are getting shot and stabbed regularly?) Property taxes are disproportionately high, the city gov't is horribly corrupt, (and Orange County gov't isn't too far behind.

I have a buddy/former coworker who lives on Liberty across from Mt. St. Mary. He loves the house itself (it's a big old 19th century house with a flat roof that you see the river from the top of), and he has been a huge supporter in the movement to revitalize the city, but ultimately he regrets his decision to buy the house. He street-parks his cars and gets a busted window or mirror about twice a year, and frequently wakes up to the sound of gunfire outside. This is in a "nicer" neighborhood.

If they commute across the river at peak hours (especially if they have to come down into Westchester) their lives will be a living hell, the traffic on the bridge is horrendous. Not a bad drive on weekends or off-peak.

I would advise against having a child in City of Newburgh. Town of, maybe, if they can get a house that's in the Cornwall school district or if they can afford a private school.

Overall, I'd say no. I do think the city is slowly coming up, but at this point it's not really worth investing in, especially for people who are trying to manage a family. If the best thing you can say about it now is that it's "not as bad as it was 13 years ago", well...expect to be saying the same thing 13 years from now.

My bil is a detective in Newburgh. No way I’d ever move there. Gangs, drugs, shootings and prostitutes galore in the city. No thanks

Cornwall on Hudson, south of Newburgh, is a completely different story. It's a lovely town with a good school system.

A friend moved up there from NYC because she already had family living there. It was a good fit. My cousin lived there and found it too isolating.

If you have a child, you'll meet other families and make friends quickly.

Newburgh itself is awful. Right across the river on Interstate 84 is the Downstate Correctional Facility is a maximum-security prison. It is an awful and pretty big thing to drive by.

Then closer to Beacon is the Fishkill Correctional Facility which is a multi-security level prison in New York, United States. It was constructed in 1896 as the Matteawan State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. As a minimum security facility, it houses both inmates that work outside the facility on behalf of the prison and inmates that are in the work release temporary release program. As a medium security facility it houses general population and Office of Mental Health inmates. As a maximum security facility it houses inmates under disciplinary segregation in the S-Block Special Housing Unit. In 1998, a maximum security S-Block Special Housing Unit was added to the facility to hold 200 maximum security inmates that are under disciplinary segregation.

There are communities outside of Newburgh like Orange Lake, Gardnertown and Balmville that are middle class, suburban in style and culturally diverse. So, those may also be alternatives to Newburgh. Orange Lake info: https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fa...york/PST045219

Balmville info: https://factfinder.census.gov/bkmk/t...00000US3604286 (can check previous years)

Gardnertown info: https://factfinder.census.gov/bkmk/t...00000US3628310
https://factfinder.census.gov/bkmk/t...00000US3628310

There's New Windsor as well, which is partially in the Newburgh, Cornwall and I believe Washingtonville SD's: https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fa...york/PST045219

Beacon actually has seen some investment and has an artsy vibe in parts, with some middle class areas outside of the city within the SD like this: Census Tract 060100 in Dutchess County, New York
