I'm a native New Yorker I grew up upstate (not what Manhattanites call upstate but real upstate, near Toronto). Also, I lived on the Upper West Side in Manhattan for over 8 years.
Here's my dilemma after living in the city I wanted to experience Los Angeles. I moved there and hated the fakeness, flakiness, and the lack of depth. However, I loved the weather, palm trees, and the beaches particularly Venice Beach because of the interesting people. It got to the point I couldn't take it anymore, so I gave tons of stuff away packed my car and moved to New Mexico. I've been here 1 year the mountains are breathtaking, the sunsets are beautiful, and the people are so friendly it's scary. Except the people I work with, they are the most envious people I have ever met. It's so dysfunctional that I would rather spend a month with Joe Jackson, Octomom, and Charlie Sheen than work there. I want to leave here because of my job and it's too slow for me, and another personal reason. I want to come back to New York but I don't think I can live in the city anymore because I gave up my apartment on the upper-west side and it now goes for $3,000 a month (studio). Also, I have a car that I'm not giving up so I don't think it would be practical to live in the city.
Finally, here is the question. I'm not familiar with the outskirts of NYC.
Where can I live as a single woman where I will have easy access to NYC, where it's clean, safe, people are considerate, take pride and care about their environment, have places where I can see live theatre, affordable without the rift raft, and is diverse. Variety is the spice of life but I can't be around walking stereotypes of any race. I regularly practice yoga so it's important to have a yoga studio nearby. Does a place like this exist?
Stony Point, Cold Spring, Beacon, New Paltz, maybe Tuxedo or Monroe. What exactly is "affordable" to you?
Affordable is no more that $800 per month for a studio apt. I'm really trying to scale down on the expenses especially since I know I will be paying for the commute back and forth.
Don't think you will be able to score something that cheap in Westchester or Rockland. You should look in to Orange and Dutchess Counties. Tuxedo, Monroe, Warwick, Florida, Goshen, Chester, Montgomery, Washingtonville, Cornwall, Beacon, Wappingers, Fishkill....
You might be able to find a small studio in Cold Spring for about $900, same with Beacon. Not so in the "river towns" of Westchester County--usually way more expensive. Good luck--I can relate to your situation very well.
