Renting and living in Albany, NY (Schenectady, Guilderland: housing, rental, college)

Hello, I am thinking about moving to Albany from NYC. I would like to know the best places to live that is safe. I did some research on downtown Albany, but I am still unsure of where to live.

Try Guilderlien. Spelling is probably completely inaccurate but my sister lives there and really loves it. She has a great two bedroom apartment for 900 including everything (heat, electric, cable, pool, etc). There are many complexs in Guilderlion similar to that. The town is located about a mile from UAlbany so its only about a ten minute drive to the downtown area and about a five minute drive to Cross-Gates Mall. If your renting-with kids-I'd def check that area out.

look at Woodlake apartments too- part of Tri-City rentals. She used to live there and they were beautiful.

at all costs...stay away from Arbor Hill (Albany) and Schenectady.

It's been a while since I lived in the area, but the New Scotland Ave neighborhoods between Albany Medical Center and St. Peters was lovely back then, and I can't see that area going bad. Some really beautiful homes on Manning and there were some nice multi-family housing/apartments in the surrounding neighborhood.

I also liked the brownstone area around Washington Park - a completely different feel to it. I had a darling little basement apartment right across the street from the park and I loved it there.

The Washington Park area is downtown, while the New Scotland Ave area is further out, but still within minutes of downtown.

And I think the proper spelling for the area LeavingCuse mentioned is Guilderland

I lived in Stonehenge Gardens in Albany. VERY quiet neighborhood and the rent for a 2 bedroom apt with PLENTY of space was 900. It was a great place to live. Definitely many older residents and some college students but nothing that makes it too crazy.

It is also part of tri-city rentals. If you go to the tri-city website they have many different apt's and most of them are pretty nice.

I would not live on new scotland ave., but many of the side roads off of new scotland (i.e. manning, north main) and even some of the smaller roads are nice.

Why stay away from Arbor Hill and Schenectady? I may be looking to move to Albany as well with my fiance and would like to learn about where to live and not to.

She has all that for 900? That sounds really good. Is the area nice? and is there parking available?

well schenectady is a separate city 10 miles away. arbor hill and the shouth end are ghetto's.as far as living in the area it all depends on what you want. there are many nice suburban towns such as guilderland, latham, colonie, east greenbush and niskayuna. as for the city itself, i reccomend staying to the west of downtown a few miles at least. probably 5 miles or so, preferably. manning blvd is very nice. myrtle avenue is nice, new scotland ave is nice (the further west the better). if you want the artsy vibe then try centre square but that is not far from the bad areas.
