Mikeny111:

Judging from your absurdly one-sided slam on Buffalo, I guess I shouldn't be surprised at this kind of "reply":

"Why do you say the Southern Tier 'SUCKS'?
I do not have enough time to respond to such a silly question."

Still, try to do a bit more than sneering here and present a thoughtful, perhaps even fact-based opinion, okay?

If you don't want to answer a reasonable question, fine. But such brattiness casts a pall on your postings generally. And as you may have noticed--this forum is thankfully largely free of needless and fruitless friction. People here almost always respond thoughtfully, showing a modicum of respect for the act of communicating, and even for one another. That's why the forum can cover so much ground, on so large & varied a state, so well. I'm sure most others reading and posting here would appreciate you holding yourself to that standard.

Thanks.

I live in the Southern Tier, and my family is from Buffalo originally. I agree Buffallo has suffered greatly from the Suburban sprwl....the housing and malls outside of city center has basically turned city center into a ghost town, but come on dude, I have seen a LOT worse.

Southern Tier, well I think it rocks, with the exception of the wind turbine battle. Opinions, we all have them, what works for you may not work for me....what works for me OBVIOUSLY does not work for you!

Hi, JustSayNo.

Thanks for chiming in.

I understand your love for the Southern Tier. Lots of beautiful, gentle countryside; very verdant even during droughts; dramatic snowstorms; some gorgeous small towns; people there have a deep loyalty to their home towns & its traditions; very unrushed, unspoiled pace of life.

Can you give your reasons for being so fond of this area?

Thanks!

Default Southern tier Ok

The southern tier.
Especially the eastern end of it has some of the most beautiful rolling hills and quaint towns.
You will find a small town, home town atmosphere.
Small but as good as anywhere else are the schools
Fresh air, with the sent of fresh mown hay and also the cow manure which helps it grow, be forewarned if this bothers you

Downside severely economically depressed.
Most wages are far below the norm, but so are the home prices.

You might want to check the job availability at Bassett healthcare in Cooperstown, New York a very very small town with a large medical center.

Angry Opinions

Homeward Bound:

I am here giving my HONEST OPINIONS of areas of NYS.
Just because i do not like the buffalo area and also the southern tier doesnt mean they are bad places to live. I have a right to give my own opinion on this board. I am not out here trying to hurt peoples feelings. But i am not going to lie to people, i just am out here giving my own OPINIONS. I believe i have a right to do that.

Since I forgot to give my opinion on my earlier posts on the Thousand Islands/Watertown area. I guess you will not let me do that since you think i am beiing sneering and bratty.

THanks!

No need to sulk now, either. No one is trying to prevent you from saying what you want to say. And if we weren't interested in others' opinions, why would we even be on this forum?

My point is simple, and I'm sure you can agree: Rather than sneer at someone's question as "silly" and revert to such crude, uninformative language as "sucks"--as if that says it all--give your reasons. If I weren't interested in WHY you think this or that "sucks," or what you (and others) think generally, I wouldn't have asked you to say why. Plus, anytime someone calls someone else's sincere question "silly," that person is obliged to say why that question is silly. Don't you agree that that's courtesy to the questioning person, and informative to everyone interested and reading?

Especially when the question isn't "silly" to begin with.

So if you have reasons for disliking the Southern Tier, go ahead and say so. I'll give your view careful consideration and respect, as I hope you would others' views. Fair enough?

This is an exceptionally helpful forum largely because so many people so reliably put some constructive effort into responding to others' questions and views. I'm sure you want to keep things mature and respectful like this.

Thumbs down Let me guess............

Watertown and Thousand Island area sucks?????????????

I happen to think that Watertown is a big depressed and gets one hell of a lot of snow......more than most people think, just from lake effect alone and unless you love snow for more than a few months, plus wind off of the lake and a bit remote, then Watertown probably isn't for you. I know it is extremely beautiful in the summer, but even in the fall, if the air temperature falls below the water temperature which happens quite a few times in the fall up here, you'd better love to shovel and dig out your car in a parking lot or driveway. There is a reason that they train the toughest Army mountain division in the nation in Watertown, NY.

check out dutchess county...I am a real estate agent for rhinebeck valley realty, and Rhinebeck is right on the Hudson River and within an hour of albany, 2 hrs from the city, and is culturally diverse, extremely low crime (if there even is any crime here). Beautiful hiking, kayaking, biking, art and crafts fairs, and much much more...including the astor home (for needy children) and deveraux for needy children and adults and many more homes for people with disabilities. Everything is scenic here, look on our website at Moderator cut: realtor soliciting to see what we have available..let me know how your search goes,
Brandi

I was born and raised in the suburbs of Syracuse. It was a nice place to grow up. The school systems are in general very good. The cost of living there is very reasonable, and I like how it's not crowded. I was a much more relaxed person there than I am now (in a suburb of Boston).

With all of those good things being said, I think relocating to Upstate NY is only a good idea if you work in one of three fields: healthcare, education, or government. Other than that, good luck finding decent work. After college I couldn't find ANYTHING good. I had to move on, and so did some of my friends.

The cost of doing business is just too high in New York State. All of the business surveys rank NY at the bottom of the list in terms of business attractiveness. NYC offsets this somewhat by a world financial capital, but Upstate just doesn't have this advantage.
