Default Orange COunty

Hmmm I found your thread in under an upstate listing and Orange County is way down south, about 50 Miles north of NYC. I lived in that county for just over five years...it was one of the most beautiful places I lived and wished I could have afforded to by a home there. But much like it is where I am now, Santa Barbara Co, in Calie, the nice homes and desired neighborhoods are VERY VERY expensive. MIddletown has some nice areas but I'm not too familiar with. Newburg...be prepared! There are a few nice pockets but most is in great need of some TLC. even the Prositutes you see need some better looking close than a t-shirt and slippers.

Across the Brigde is Tarrytown which is close to the famous Sleepy Hollow is nice as is Whiteplains area but this is also very $$$....Even Rockland, and Dutchess Counties are pretty high, but being so close you still have Jersey and Pa to look at..or go north and look past Goshen (nice but pricey) or even Sullivan County. I hope this helps. I never wanted to leave but didn't make enough to live comfortably.

Best of luck

I am from the FD area. If you were from there, you would be in disbelief at how everything has grown and changed. It used to be a very laid back region before FD really expanded and developed. It shames me to hear how these same people are using the current military situation to line their pockets. I used to live in many different rental apartments/houses in the surrounding area of drum. I don't know if this is helpful or not but these towns are fairly close to the base if you see an ad in any of them: Philadelphia, Evans Mills, Watertown, Black River, Carthage, Calcium, Theresa and La Fargeville. I hope y'all find something. You probably don't want to get too far away because the winters can be harsh up there.
My husband is retired Navy, my son is in Afghanistan and if my son in law and daughter when they leave Fort Rucker get their pick of orders, they will also be looking for something around Drum. Good luck to you all and may God bless.

A lot has changed since I last posted a reply to this. Never thought I would take a job at Fort Drum and move up here but I did. I start today! My daughter and soninlaw got stationed here last month. Housing market is wide open right now. I just rented yesterday at Sackets Harbor. House on the water (Lake Ontario) for 1200.00. I know thats a lot but that is how much my kids pay in Philadelphia. Craigslist.com is thplace to look and newsjunky.com also. I found my place on craigslist.
Right now I know there is a place in Antwerp for 875.00, Moon Lake for 875.00 and I know of one in Oxbow for a lot less. The man in Oxbow is real picky about who rents the house even tho its an old one but i know you could get it for probably 500.00. email me on that one. first number for antwerp is: 315-287-0582. Moon Lake is: 315-628-5009.

I am so glad that I found this page!! My husband got orders for Ft. Drum to report on March 10, 2010. We have been at Ft. Bragg for the 6.5 years he's been in. We have one son and one dog. I have heard lots of not good things about the landlords and how the rental price is as high as the bah not including utilities....we want to avoid that. We will only be there for probably about 6 months to a year. I don't think that living on post would work out since we might have to wait that long for a home. (but i still plan on calling them to get that information) but i would also consider living off post in an apartment or rental house - as long as they allow pets! def a 2 bedroom, but 3 would be good since we'd need the extra storage space. but any help or suggestions would be wonderful!! i will definitely check out craigslist and i have checked out the ahrn site, so we'll see i guess. thanks for any suggestions....
