HELP!! Moving to Fort Drum!!!
Hi! My husband is stationed at Fort Drum and we're having a HARD TIME finding a place for rent. The cost of living in New York is a lot different from here in South Georgia, we're looking for a 2-3 bedroom house/apartment to rent. We prefer something under $700/month or under $850/month, utilities included. Why most places don't allow dogs, I'm not sure. We'd rather not leave our dog behind being as she is part of that family! PLEASE!!! We're desperate!!! Anyone in the Fort Drum area, can you atleast point us in the right direction? Our time is running out!!! I'm staying with my mother and her and her husband are getting a divorce! I have 2 young boys, one 2 y/o and the other 6 months old!! We have NO WHERE to go and the military is not helping us like they should be! Please, we don't want to be left on the streets!!!

Check some previous threads, there were a couple of other posters (search Ft. Drum) in the same situation. Thank you and your family for your service and sacrifice.

Try looking at the Watertown newspaper classifieds. Watertown Daily Times: Covering Northern New York's Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence Counties
My daughter just got offered on post housing in Ft Drum after 6 months of waiting, The list is long and the problem her and her husband had was coming up with the 1st, last month rent + deposit for non-military housing, but there were places available, just not affordable on the military salary.

I can relate to your situation. My husband recently got a new job in Watertown and will be starting there Nov 1st. We cannot find any rental property either. We have decided to look for a small house to buy for now. This will eventually mean another move in the near future but we do not really have a choice. We need a place to live. We were not prepared to have to purchase a home at this time and so financially we are going to be burdened for awhile. I am staying here in MI until I can get our current home up for sale and sold--which will be a feat in and of itself as the market has ground to a near halt it seems. Anyhow, good luck with your home search. I finally contacted a realtor to help me. Perhaps you can do the same and have the advantage of someone who knows the area and market helping you out.
Good luck to you and God Bless your military family. We appreciate the sacrifices you are making for our family and this country.

Well, although I do not live in Ft Drum area, my son who is stationed there had the same problem you are having in finding housing for his wife and 2 small children. They just took a ride one day before he had to report and got the local newspaper and got lucky. I spend every weekend there visiting and I know what you say is true. The wait for base housing is 2 years and off post rentals are few and far between. They live in Natural Bridge which is about 15 minutes from the Fort in a small home for $850 a month PLUS utilities. One close town is Carthage which is nice. Look up the online newspaper like a previous reply said. You can also try calling a local realtor but I dont know how much luck you would have. I can try to help you if you want to e mail me privately. I can ask my son to look in the local paper and get back to you. I think it is a shame that the Army doesnt provide adequate housing for the men and women who are fighting for our nation. There arent even any hotels or motels in the area to stay in temporarily. It is a shame. Please get back to me if you want me to help you. I will try in any way that I can. It's the least I can do to support a fellow soldier's family in a time of need. God bless you and your family and I hope that all of our men and women come home soon.

Having someone in the area who can keep a lookout for properties for you is an excellent idea. I did not have that advantage, which in frustration is what finally made me contact a realtor. The realtor confirmed that rental property is difficult to find and expensive for the most part. She was willing to scout rentals for us, but because of our time-crunch we chose the option of buying a house to get us through for now. It seemed easier to buy than rent and monthly probably won't cost us much more out- of- pocket. In order to look online at the Watertown Daily, I had to pay to subscribe to the paper.
The bottom line is that housing is hard to come buy especially if you have a time constraint. I cannot believe that military families are not being provided for any better than this! It is appalling! Again, good luck. There are a lot of people on this forum who have good advice and can maybe even help in some way. Hang in there

I got here 3.5 weeks ago- 99% of all off post "rental communities" are actually considered off base military housing- i couldnt find any rentals either!- that will change Dec 07- the property mngrs. have wisened up, see the military BAH as "big money" - it doesn't take much up here- and they are not renewing their contracts- soldiers must sign private leases that will force them to also pay seperate utilities- or get out by 12/01- so the housing office here is going crazy trying to get all these people on post- the private companies are listing the rents at or above 100% of the BAH and from what I hear winter electric will bankrupt you. go to the ft drum website and follow the housing links to the "801 information"- these are the rental companies that are doing this, and their contact info is in there- ALSO- brand new rental townhouse community called EAGLE RIDGE- 3 mins. off post- well under construction and leasing- 315-629-5069- Eagle Ridge Village - The Fort Drum Area's Newest & Finest Apartment Community- i had to drive up for a visit before i was convinced- these houses are 100+ years old with sagging porches and living room furniture on the porch- most rentals are houses that have been chopped into 3-4 "units" and are dismal- local paper is Watertown Daily Times-google it- they have classifieds w/ rentals- INSIST on pics before you do anything! good luck and remember to breathe!

Take a look on Jefferson-Lewis Board of REALTORS to search for available houses for sale. We are buying a house for 67,000 in Carthage and with taxes the monthly payment will be about $631. It's cheaper than rent if you can find a nice little house. Good luck! Also, I heard some of the former 801 developments are now only asking for BAH since there vacancy is so high. Also check Automated Housing Referral Network (AHRN.com) v4.4. Its a website to find military houseing.
