Thinking Of Relocating To Orange County, New York
I Am Seriously Considering Relocating To Orange County, New York From Brooklyn. While I Love The City, I Now Have Two Children And Believe They Will Benefit From A More Suburban Setting. Unlike Me, They Prefer A More Country Like Setting. I Am Seeking An Area That Is Racially Diverse. I Was Told That Monroe-woodbury Would Be A Great Area Because The Town Has An Excellent School System. Could Some One Tell Me About The Racial Diversity Of This Area. Further, Are There Many Baptist Churches In This Area? Any Information Would Be Greatly Appreciated

Yes, M-W school district is a good one
The area is very racially diverse and the school district is one of the better ones in the state. Taxes are also on the high side although you can get a home still with relatively low taxes if you look around. We are going into contract this week and have a very nice home with pretty low taxes considering we are in Monroe In my neighborhood it is not unusual to see a group of kids consisting of white, black, and hispanic. Good luck in your search

The best thing for you to really do is come up and ge ta good feel for the area, take a look at some homes, go shopping, check out some of the local things to do and that will tell you if this is an area that you really want to be in. Also price range will help determine the best location for you.

Moving up here..
I think you are correct, our area is culturally diverse... we are not really upstate NY...I like to call us the downstate upstate people. Most of the churches here are catholic or some flavor of protestant but there is something for everyone. come and check it out. Moderator cut: realtor soliciting

We just moved to Central Valley, which is in the Monroe-Woodbury district. Great neighborhoods, really friendly people. We are a mixed family and have had no trouble at all meeting people and making friends. We are Catholic but there are a lot of Protestant churches in the area as well.

No problem at all. Good luck, and don't hesitate to ask any area specific questions you may have.

Graduating college
Hey I am about to graduate from college and one of the companies I am interviewing with has an opening in Orange County. I'm from Texas now... would I be miserable being a Texan used to the heat in a place like this? And is there much of a nightlife for younger people? Or should I look into it? Hopefully someone can help me out... thanks

It's not bad. It is definitely what you make of it. I am originally from Jersey and in the Marines for 5 years, so I've been all over. I almost moved to Texas (if I reenlisted), so I know what it's like there. There is a bit of a nightlife here, but you have to go out and find it. It doesn't just jump right out at you. Also, depending on where in Orange County you are you really aren't that far away from NYC that you can always shoot down there for a night-on-the-town if you'd like.
Most of the areas are very nice, and depending on the exact location in Orange, you can be right near a train station to the City.
My suggestion is do what I did when I thought about reenlisted...take a flight out here, go look at a couple of houses for sale and some rentals, go out for dinner, go out for a night in the city, and go to some local things. 4-5 nights is more than enough, and you can either fly direct into Newark (it's your best bet) or into Stewart International Airport (but you can't get a diret flight in).
Good luck and don't hesitate to ask some questions!

Hey Joey thanks for the quick reply. I'm trying to weigh my options on whether to take a chance and move up to NY or take another job back in Dallas where most of my family and friends are.
So according to mapquest Orange County is only about 90 minutes from NYC... is that true? Or does traffic end up making it longer?
Do you know if crime is bad up there? I just need to figure out some of this stuff before I randomly move up to New York only to find out that I accidentally moved into the ghetto or something. I mean the last thing I need is to spend thousands of dollars moving myself to the opposite side of the country to a bad neighborhood.
I'm planning on most likely getting an apartment since I won't even have roommates at least for a while, so I'm assuming any kinds of property taxes won't really have an effect on me. Thanks again
Alex
