update on move, Plattsburgh area
Well, we did it. Moved from Bergen COunty NJ, to what was originally a vacation home to selling the NJ home. I LOVE IT!!!!! I thank all who commented on earlier posts and this was the best move of my life and one of the best decisions I ever made.
I have a job interview Tuesday, people are great, no competition, love my house, town. I am in Schuyler Falls, which has it all. Close to mountains and close to a city so I don't feel so isolated.
When I open my bills, I JUMP for joy!!!!! After suffering in NJ, this is so much more affordable for the working class.
My life is so much better. Thanks all, Marilyn

Welcome and yes, it is a very well kept secret.....ssshhhhhhhhh
Hey,
If you need any help or recommendations regarding shops or cool places (like Pray's market this time of year has the best fresh farm corn and tomatoes and veggies............the store is on Route 3/Cornelia Street). They also have a cool hayride in the fall that goes through the pumpkin patches and their old brick farmhouse always has the entire front yard/field area full of pick your own pumpkins...........Great for kids and photo ops! Welcome!

Montreal.....head up to Montreal and go to a SAQ store (run by the provincial government but full of great beers and non-dep wines).

Other options.............
There are a couple of really friendly local places.............one is Cumberland Bay Market. They have done special orders for a couple of people I know (also check out Mary's homemade pies there and meat selection.........great food!) They might order you whatever you want but you might have to prepay? Also, there is a tiny store on Cornelia Street (very near St Peter's church) that always has kegs for the college parties, etc. I can't think of the name of it, but they are supposed to have various beers. The last place (locally) that I will mention is over on Johnson Avenue (near Momot School) in the city. They are small but are supposed to be known for their great selection of beer. They also sell fishing licenses, equipment if you are into bass or trout fishing.....some of the best up here. Also, don't rule out the large supermarkets. Price Chopper has a very good selection of beer and probably Hannaford does also. I think you will find something in one of these spots, but if all of that somehow fails, you can drive over (13 minute nice ferry ride from Cumberland Head to Grand Isle Vermont and there is a state run liquor store there.....Montreal is great and am heading there next weekend, but the lines at the border this summer have been very unpredictable. But definitely go. And............check out some of the townships along the lake to the east of Montreal......Fort Chambly does reinactments and is an awesome place for kids. There is even a little boat to take you over to the forts and barracks and of course you get to sample some of the quaint French food in little restaurants. Just be prepared on a weekend. Can be crowded............Lots to do without even getting into Montreal traffic. But the Metro there is easy as pie and clean and safe!

Beer!
I heartily second P'Burgher's recommendation of the place on Johnson Street (between Peru and S. Catherine). It's called RICHARD'S BAIT AND TACKLE, and you have to go there at least once for the atmosphere, if nothing else. A great walk-in beer cooler (and the owner takes requests; if they don't have it, he'll order it), and on Friday afternoon, it's the North Country in all its glory:
Working guys in dusty clothes knocking off for the weekend, fishermen buying bait and refreshment for Saturday on the lake, college profs who love experimenting with new micro- and foreign brews, Plattsburgh State students who "need" to relax after all that studying, and the occasional Momot Elementary parent who just happens to be walking a kid home via this route after school (OK, that's me).
I recommend the Belgian style heavy brews for the cold winter months: Quebec's Fin du Monde and New York State-brewed Ommegang. Oh, and Lake Placid Ubu Ale, brewed right here in the Burgh!
They're usually closed by 8 pm, though.

Know you are busy but...........
You said to ask about your goulash recipe. If you can share, I love trying new recipes, especially with the cooler weather coming...............Should go well with ANY sort of beer, eh???????? I am also curious if you have relatives or friends here or just found out about this area through research???????? You will meet so many great folks up here................nothing like it!

Here it goes, I was so happy reading your thread then I got to this one. Its starting already. You come from NJ where you were used to everything you had and then come to a very rural place without many of the comforts you were used to and I just want to encourage you not to turn the North Country into the place you just left. It happens ALL the time and unless you get ahold of your expectations right now, you are going to be miserable in less than a year. Then demand all the missing elements be brought back and before you know it your once beloved North Country will look exactly like what you left.

Just because..........
the lady wants to know where to get some hearty beer/ale, she is suddenly trying to turn this area into New Jersey? I didn't get that impression at all........maybe I missed something, but I thought she was just asking for advice? If she had a vaca home here for awhile, then she probably knows exactly why she moved here and I doubt that beer is at the top of that list, but hey, who knows??????????????????????????
