Default Retirement dilemma: Tidewater VA or Hurley NY?

I'm retiring soon from DC. A little while ago I bought a place in Tidewater VA where I'd planned to retire.

I lived in Dutchess County for many years and have always loved the mid-Hudson Valley for its culture, people, climate -- you name it. I recently found a house in Hurley, NY that I could easily see myself retiring to instead of Tidewater VA. But now I'm reading negative things about Kingston crime/schools, haphazard Ulster County zoning, NYS cost of living/economy, etc. etc.

Can anybody help me clarify things by telling me -- pro or con -- about Hurley as a possible retirement spot?
